I don’t remember anything about US boots on the ground and that would have been big news. I do remember the US was very keen to get its hands on the naval base and that was the reason for the riots and takeover in Kiev, then they would have been “invited ” in and game over.. I think events in Crimea stalled that and then Russia moved in knowing the US plan but there was no way they would allow their base to fall into US hands.. Remember the Crimean war of 1853 where Britain , France and Turkey ( Ottoman Empire ) fought Russia . That was Russia not Ukraine who held Crimea winning it off The Ottoman Empire around 1770.which was just before the American war of independence against British control. That is something the Yanks should consider when discussing who owns Crimea.
