Late on June 1, a series of blasts emanated from a large ammunition depot of the Sham Legion, a faction of the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation, in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib.
The depot was located in the vicinity of the town of Babsqa around two kilometers from the border with Turkey. Loads of ammunition which were stored inside the depot blew up completely erasing it. The ammunition included Grad 122 mm rockets.
The powerful blasts sent several rockets to the towns of Kafr Lusin, Aaqrabate and Sarmada as well as to the nearby Saladin refugee camp, where thousands of civilians live. One rocket also landed inside Turkey’s territory.
At least three people were wounded as a results of the blasts. One of the wounded is reportedly in a life-threatening condition.
Syrian activists claimed that a drone strike targeted the depot causing the ammunition stored there to explode. While some activists attributed the alleged drone strike to the US-led coalition, others said Russia was behind it. Drones of the coalition and the Russian Aerospace Forces were flying over Greater Idlib before and during the explosions.
Greater Idlib is currently under a ceasefire agreement that was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than two years ago.
Factions in Greater Idlib are known to store their ammunition and heavy weapons in residential areas along the border with Turkey. In the last few years, several such depots were destroyed either as a result of Russian strikes or accidents caused by lack of safety measures.
More information about the Babsqa ammunition depot explosion and its cause will likely surface in the upcoming few days, if not within a few hours.
