An explosive device planted under a tree in Park Hayarkon in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv exploded on September 15 morning, without causing any casualties.
Israeli Police announced that officers were dispatched to the park and were investigating “the circumstances of the incident.”
Meanwhile, the Shin Bet security agency said in a statement that it was involved in the police investigation of the blast, indicating that authorities suspected the explosion was the result of a planned attack.
A few hours after the attack, police closed off part of the Route 431 highway near the central city of Ramle, and security forces stopped a suspicious van. Three suspects who were aboard the van were reportedly detained. Still, no explosive devices were found in the vehicle.
“Regarding the arrest on the Route 431 highway … the connection to the incident [in Tel Aviv] is being examined,” the Shin Bet said.
Israel saw a surge in shooting, ramming and stabbing attacks in recent months as a result of the government’s deadly crackdown on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. However, bombings remain uncommon.
In November of last year, two Israelis were killed and more than 20 others were wounded when two explosive devices blew up near different bus stops in the outskirts of the historic city of Jerusalem. This was the first deadly bombing in Israel in years.
