July 13th marked five days of violent riots in South Africa, with at least 72 people killed so far.
The looting and violence are continuing despite President Cyril Ramaphosa deploying the army to quell the unrest.
Security officials said the government was working to halt the spread of the violence and looting from Zuma’s home in KwaZulu-Natal province, to the country’s biggest city Johannesburg and surrounding Gauteng province, and to the Indian Ocean port city of Durban.
The armed forces were sending 2,500 soldiers to help the overwhelmed police. But these numbers are dwarfed by the deployment of more than 70,000 soldiers to enforce last year’s coronavirus lockdown, and only a handful of them were seen at some shopping centers.
“The total number of people who have lost their lives since the beginning of these protests … has risen to 72,” the police said in a statement.
Most of the deaths “relate to stampedes that occurred during incidents of looting of shops”, it said.
Protests that followed the arrest of former leader Jacob Zuma for failing to appear at a corruption inquiry have widened into looting and an outpouring of general anger over the hardship and inequality that persist 27 years after the end of apartheid.
Zuma, 79, was sentenced late June for defying a constitutional court order to give evidence at an inquiry investigating high-level corruption during his nine years in office until 2018.
The decision to jail him resulted from legal proceedings seen as a test of post-apartheid South Africa’s ability to enforce the rule of law, including against powerful politicians.
There is ample footage showing the intense situation.

Notably, even police are looting and stealing.

The situation is entirely out of control, as the army can also do very little to stop the violence.

There are ample jokes that South Africa has turned into something out of a Mad Max movie, but the parallels are clear and quite concerning.
