Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on February 20 that a military operation against the terrorists occupying Syria’s Idlib is “inevitable.”
“I think that [such a military operation] is inevitable because the terrorists who refuse to surrender need to be eliminated on the ground,” Bogdanov said answering a question about a possible operation in Idlib, according to RT.
Bogdanov’s statement came in line with a recent report by Sputnik, which claimed that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is planning to launch a limited military operation against the terrorists stationed around Idlib. Several military sources confirmed that the army is indeed deploying large forces around the northern governroate.
The leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran had held a meeting on Syria in the Russian city of Sochi last week. During the meeting, Russia and Turkey agreed on new steps to stabilize the situation in the demilitarize zone around Idlib.
However, these steps are yet to be implemented and the militants have stepped up their attacks on civilians in government-held areas since Sochi meeting. These developments explain the need for a military operation in Idlib as soon as possible.
