In late 1932 – precisely when the genocidal famine struck – the Central Statistical Bureau in Moscow ceased to publish demographic data.

The 1937 census was given top priority. The census director I. Kravel was awarded the Order of Lenin for his meticulous work. 2. Harvest and Climatic Conditions

3. Laws and Decrees

The 7 August 1932 law drafted by Joseph Stalin on the protection of the socialist property stipulated the death penalty for “theft of socialist property”. Ukrainian villagers were executed by firing squads for theft of a sack of wheat and in some cases even for two sheaves of corn or a husk of grain. The 6 December 1932 decree stipulated a complete blockade of villages for allegedly sabotaging the grain procurement campaign – de facto sentencing their Ukrainian inhabitants to execution by starvation. An unpublished decree signed by Molotov encouraged Russian peasants to settle into the empty or half-empty villages of “the free lands of Ukraine” [and North Caucasus also inhabited by Ukrainians and likewise devastated by the famine]. 4. Means of Implementing Forced Collectivization and Draconian Grain Requisition Quotas

The All-Union Peoples Commissariat of Agriculture in Moscow initially mobilized some of its most reliable ‘25-thousanders’ -Party members, majority of them Russians – and sent them to Ukraine to organize collective farms. Further ‘thousanders,’ the army, the secret police [GPU], the militia and armed brigades were sent into Ukrainian villages to force the farmers into collective farms and to supervise the Draconian grain expropriation and eventually the entire output of butter, corn, sugar beet, etc. Local granaries in Ukraine held large stockpiles of ‘state reserves’ for emergencies, such as war, but the raging famine did not qualify as an emergency. 5. Geography of the Famine

The 1933 Famine-Genocide was geographically focused for political ends. It stopped precisely at the Ukrainian-Russian ethnographic border. The borders of Ukraine were strictly patrolled by the military to prevent starving Ukrainians from crossing into Russia in search of bread. For example: The Kharkiv Province on the Ukrainian side was devastated while the contiguous Belgorod Province on the Russian side with similar climatic conditions and demographic profiles showed no evidence of starvation or any unusual mortality. Armed GPU officers were also stationed to prevent starving Ukrainians from entering the zone near the Polish and Romanian borders. Those who tried to cross the Dnister River into Romania were shot. 6. Exports

7. Victims and Losses

At the height of the Famine Ukrainian villagers were dying at the rate of 25,000 per day or 1,000 per hour or 17 per minute. By comparison the Allied soldiers died at the rate of 6,000 per day during the Battle of Verdun. Among the children one in three perished as a consequence of collectivization and the famine. According to dissident Soviet demographer M. Maksudov “no fewer than three million children born between 1932-1933 died of hunger.” 80% of Ukrainian intellectuals were liquidated because they refused to collaborate in the extermination of their countrymen. Out of about 240 Ukrainian authors 200 were liquidated or disappeared. Out of about 84 linguists 62 perished. The Ukrainian population may have been reduced by as much as 25%.”

Yaroslav Bilinsky Yaroslav Bilinsky, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware, writes in the Journal of Genocide Research (1999) in a review of Holodomor literature—he concludes:

Political usage should not override scholarly logic, especially political usage which is just being established in independent Ukraine, arguably seven years late. My argument, however, is that both logic and political usage in Ukraine point in one direction, that of the terror-famine being genocidal. James Mace American historian James E. Mace wrote:

Stanislav Kulchytsky Ukrainian historian Stanislav Kulchytsky has contended that:

[T]he way Stalin dealt with the Ukrainian countryside lifted the events out of the category of merely a famine and into the realm of genocide. In the fall of 1932, on orders from Moscow, government troops came to villages requisitioning grain to meet Stalin’s unrealistic quotas. At gunpoint they took away grain, even when peasants did not have enough for themselves. Those peasants who had no grain were deprived of other food stocks. Those who resisted were shot. Then a Jan. 22nd, 1933 directive from Stalin and Molotov sealed off Ukrainian borders to prevent famished peasants from escaping.[57]

Norman Naimark According to Norman Naimark, Professor of East European Studies at Stanford University, the Ukrainian killer famine should be considered an act of genocide.[58] He writes:

There is enough evidence – if not overwhelming evidence – to indicate that Stalin and his lieutenants knew that the widespread famine in the USSR in 1932-33 hit Ukraine particularly hard, and that they were ready to see millions of Ukrainian peasants die as a result. They made no efforts to provide relief; they prevented the peasants from seeking food themselves in the cities or elsewhere in the USSR; and they refused to relax restrictions on grain deliveries until it was too late. Stalin’s hostility to the Ukrainians and their attempts to maintain their form of “home rule” as well as his anger that Ukrainian peasants resisted collectivization fueled the killer famine.[59]

Mark Tauger and opponents West Virginia University professor Mark Tauger argued that the 1932 harvest was smaller than the official estimate, and smaller than the harvest of 1933, which would suggest the famine was not “man-made”.[60] Tauger’s evidence, methodologies and conclusions in regard to the famine were criticized by Robert Davies and Stephen Wheatcroft in their book The Years of Hunger: Soviet Agriculture, 1931–33, published in 2004.[61][62] Tauger, however, maintains that his harvest estimates are supported by evidence, and his conclusions are shared by a number of other scholars.[61] Historian James Mace wrote that Mark Tauger’s argument “is not taken seriously by either Russians or Ukrainians who have studied the topic.”[63] David Marples, professor of history at the University of Alberta, was critical of Tauger’s claims, stating “Dr. Tauger and other scholars fail to distinguish between shortages, droughts and outright famine. There is no such thing as a ‘natural’ famine, no matter the size of the harvest. A famine requires some form of state or human input.”[64]

Steven Rosefielde Professor Steven Rosefielde argues in his 2009 book Red Holocaust that “Grain supplies were sufficient enough to sustain everyone if properly distributed. People died mostly from terror-starvation (excess grain exports, seizure of edibles from the starving, state refusal to provide emergency relief, bans on outmigration, and forced deportation to food-deficit locales), not poor harvests and routine administrative bungling.”[65]

R. Davies and S. Wheatcroft These authors disagree with Rosefielde’s views, and, although they do not absolve Stalin from responsibility for Holodomor, they conclude the famine was essentially unintentional. Their analysis of previously unavailable archival data demonstrate that a combination of rapid industrialisation and two successive bad harvests (1931 and 1932) were the primary reason of the famine. The authors agree, however, that Stalin’s policies towards the peasants were brutal and ruthless[66]

Timothy Snyder Yale historian Timothy Snyder asserts that the starvation was “deliberate”[67] as several of the most lethal policies applied only, or mostly, to Ukraine.[68] He argues the Soviets themselves “made sure that the term genocide, contrary to Lemkin’s intentions, excluded political and economic groups.” Thus the Ukrainian famine can be presented as “somehow less genocidal because it targeted a class, kulaks, as well as a nation, Ukraine.”[69]

Michael Ellman Professor Michael Ellman of the University of Amsterdam concludes that “Team-Stalin’s behaviour in 1930–34 clearly constitutes a crime against humanity (or a series of crimes against humanity) as that is defined in the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court”.[note 1]:681 These include not only policies that exacerbated the starvation (exporting 1.8 million tonnes of grain during the height of the famine, banning migration from famine-stricken areas and refusing to secure humanitarian aid from abroad), but also mass shootings and deportations of alleged “kulaks”, “counter-revolutionaries” and other “Anti-Soviet elements” around the same time.[70]:684, 681, 689

However, as to whether “Team-Stalin [was, further,] guilty of genocide”,[70]:681 Ellman asserts that if so, “Many other events of the 1917–53 era (e.g. the deportation of whole nationalities, and the ‘national operations’ of 1937–38) would also qualify as genocide, as would the acts of [many Western countries].”[70]:690–691 Citing three physical elements susceptible also of “non-genocidal interpretations” and two mental elements lacking proof of specific intent that he contends are, taken together, “not unambiguous evidence of genocide”, Ellman concludes as to genocide, that were he a juror, he would support a not guilty or “not proven” verdict.[note 2]:686

Ellman asserts that the “national operations” of the NKVD, particularly the “Polish operation”, which occurred during the late 1930s during the great purges may qualify as genocide even under the strictest definition, but there has been no ruling on the matter.[70]:663–693

His role in destroying my country, the Soviet Union, was enormous and is patently obvious to me. He said many mouthfuls of lies, including aggressive lies, about the Soviet Union. Whole tomes of nothing but lies (mixed with truthful insignificant detail). Spare me your exculpatory zeal for the Lying Man! Мопед не мой, так что хз, чего ты пыжишься. Про ложь я уже сказал. Предпочитаю, чтобы у меня были общие факты с Гаспаряном, нежели общая ложь с борцунами за честное имя Союза. Зато “zeal” у меня, ага.

Боролся и буду бороться за доброе имя Союза. Слишком вижу кому и насколько выгодно вконец опорочить, добить и истереть память и историю. I know how much is at stake here

Вот и не нужно приписывать того, чего не мог. Нужно находить корректные формулировки, а не фантазировать. Я не спорю о том, что он подразумевает между строк и чему прокладывает дорогу, называя Союз мировым злом. Но призыв ядерное оружие ИСПОЛЬЗОВАТЬ из его высказываний рациональной ЛОГИКОЙ вывести нельзя. Заявлять об обратном – как минимум манипуляция, а вполне возможно и самообман.
