The Russian help went and goes far beyond air support. Including air defense and heavy weapons maintenance and upgrades. Along with military intelligence and a whole gamut of military and non military support where the Syrian government needed it.

I don’t know where you get your numbers from. Syrian military helicopters and air force bombers and fighters were active from the get go. They were very busy.

Militaries make strategic withdraws , tactical withdraws and maneuvers all the time. Its called ‘ battle pulses ‘ in military jargon. Russia helped immensely, no doubt about it, by 2015, Hezbollah and Iran , along with Iraqi militias, heck even Afghan volunteers to the tune of 35-40 thousand, and thousands of Chechen Russians were pouring in to assist the Syrian Arab Army.

The 10% that was controlled by the SAA and company, still contained a substantial part of the Syrian military that was falling back. And the Russians have had a military base there for decades and the Syrians probably were assured that they had their back if they needed it, which they did. They couldn’t stop the terror onslaught and were falling back just like the SAA was. Only Russian intervention turned the tide. Yes Iran, Hezbollah, the SAA and others provided the man power. But without Russian air power and heavy weapons support. Damascus would have fallen. It was under siege and dealing with attacks on downtown and occupation of several suburbs.

Damascus was on the verge of falling. It was close to the end. If the Russians didn’t intervene when they did. It would have been all over. Yes everybody else did most of the fighting. As much as I agree with you that Russia has helped the Damascus government of Bashar Assad, and in effect the Syrian people, the Syrian government was by 2015 engaged in a series of tactical withdraws to consolidate forces, thus conceding territory to the enemy, which would then be spread thin. By 2015, Hezbollah and Iran were just starting to really crank up their involvement in Syria, and there were reversals on the part of the proxy terrorists.

Even with all this going on, there never was a panic among the Syrian people, or high ranking defections among government officials, nor really and really high placed military officials. Things in Damascus were rather calm. Bashar Assad and his administration had only a ‘ partial ‘ mobilization for draft into the military.

The Syrian Arab Army, NDF and auxiliaries consolidated their positions, when thousands of Hezbollah and IRGC Iranian troops came to beef up and reverse gains made by the terrorists. If their was but 10% of Syria left free, there would have been major flight to get out by ranking officials and military officers. And the government would have went into ‘ full mobilization ‘ , which it never did, ever, during the entire conflict. Bashar had received assurances, and the Iranians too, that Putin was sending an airforce contingent which coupled with the men on the ground, essentially doing the ‘ heavy lifting ‘ , there was calm and the Syrians were resolute that victory would be theirs.

Russia’s help to Syria was effective and disastrous for the terror proxies, but lets not discount the bravery and valor of the boots on the ground that essentially gained the upper hand and the rout we see today. Wars, especially the kind in the greater Middle East are not won by air forces alone, as Israel learned in 2006, and the U.S. / NATO have been learning in Afghanistan for 18 years now.
