On February 16, the Russian army took control of the central districts of Avdiivka in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Russian control of the city center was confirmed by the footage from the city.
The servicemen of the Russian 55th Brigade planted Russian flags of the city of Tuva and the Russian Ministry of Defence on the memorial on the site of the mass grave of Soviet soldiers of the Southern Front who died in the battles for Avdiivka against the German Nazis in 1943. The memorial is located in the Railway Workers’ Park opposite the Avdiivka railway station.
Another Russian flag is waving on the ruins of the local hospital located nearby.

Ukrainian forces deployed on the streets in the north-east of the city have the last chance to escape to the south in order to avoid the cauldron. Russian forces are approaching the Khimik district, where the Ukrainian military attempts to hold the defense in the high-rise buildings.

well, dan it seems as though you might be correct. it does appear that the article got the city name wrong. the city of avdiivka does seem to be more appropriate. however, it does not negate the fact that this war is one that is unnecessary and a bit absurd from the eyes of an outsider such as myself. war always has two sides to it and one cannot really judge which side is right nor wrong because there are always different perspectives on the whole matter.
avdiivka is the least appropriate since in this region russian has always been spoken and never ukrainian
it matters because the ukrainians wanted it and thus it is an important tool of demoralization to ensure they can’t have it.
it matters because ukraine used it to shell donetsk and purposely kill countless civilians since 2014. they knew what they were doing, and so did the west.
avdiivka will live forever in infamy, just like the rest of that neonazi coup government. it is now avdeevka (or avdeyevka for the correct pronunciation if you prefer, as the 2nd e is pronounced ye)
