NAGORNO-KARABAKH – NOVEMBER 14, 2020: Russian peacekeepers guard the area near the Dadivank Armenian monastery.
On September 20, Russian peacekeepers were killed near the settlement of Janyatag in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
The Russian peacekeepers were returning from the observation post by car in the Janyatag region. Their car was shelled with small arms, the soldiers inside were killed. The Defense Ministry did not specify exactly how many people were killed and who opened fire.
“Russian and Azerbaijani representatives of investigative bodies are working on the spot to clarify all the circumstances of the incident,” the Defense Ministry said.
Any other details of the incident are yet to be revealed. The Janyatag region is located in the eastern part of Karabakh. There are two deposits located near the Janyatag region, including one copper-molybdenum deposit and a gold mine. According to unconfirmed reports, the deposits came under the Azerbaijani control. However, the presence of Russian peacekeepers in the area raised doubts about the Azerbaijani advance in the area.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh continue to perform their mission, despite the escalation. Russian peacekeepers are evacuating civilians from the dangerous areas. The military command of the Russian peacekeeping contingent mediated the ceasefire agreement between Baku and the Arstakh authorities. The defeated Prime Minister of Armenia Pashinyan said that if the Russian peacekeepers made such a proposal, then they are fully responsible for the security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. In fact, all the processes that the parties have agreed on will take place under control of Russian peacekeepers. They include the withdrawal of the remaining Armenian forces from the region and its demilitarization.
