According to preliminary reports, a Su-24M tactical front-line bomber of the Russian Aerospace Forces was shot down during its combat sortie over the Black Sea.
The Su-24M was reportedly operating under the cover of the Russian Su-30SM fighter aircraft. According to Ukrainian reports, the bomber was shot down by the US-made MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile system deployed near Odessa.

“crash” would suggest technical trouble rather than enemy action.
possible. nothing to say this isn’t out of the exception. patriot is designed for this. air craft interception, especially of a escorting and slow flying aircraft is within parameters. that said, if kiev moved their aa this far south it means they are desperate to slow the russian air dominate here. or they are paving for the paper wings of the f16.
if it is preparing dor f16, they would have to be flown in either from poland, or over the black sea. the later will be immediately intercepted once taking off and leaving nato airspace. the ukrainians likely are deploying all aa assets to limit russia interception in the area to achieve this likely. that said, the likelihood of the patriot battery being struck is high now also.
another mention is if the f16 are taking off from nato airspace, they will likely have to be without weapons equipped as taking off with weapons and if engaged while enrout to ukraine or piloted by ukraine would make nato directly implicit in any combat. at the moment nato cam hide behind the guise of material and intel support and “volunteer/merc” boots but this would drastically change.

if true, then this is the only reported case of a patriot missile taking down a russian aircraft asset (as far as i am aware) since the air defence system was deployed on kiev controlled ukrainian territory. i would add the same point as another commentator made, the patriot system will now be one of russia’s prime targets in the odessa region, that’s if it has not already been taken out since this incident took place.
elint platforms like a-50u, il-22, su-24mp need to get to work. while drones like orion scout out the shores of odessa to find patriot. russian military imaging satellites also can spot patriot battery location. khinzals are waiting to smash this patriot :)
the loss of a russian air asset is negligible, experienced pilots are far more valuable so let’s hope the pilot was eventually picked up by the search and rescue team.

ukranians never turn on their fire control radar, instead use nato awacs and their own p18, 36d6 radars to detect jets, then only turn on fire control briefly when planes fly in engagement zone, then turn off right after and relocate. russian satellites, elint, drones can find this patriot battery and smash it with khinzal. next objective :)

how close to odessa? basic patriot range is 30km, extended 60-to-90km. flat range, so the plane must be much much closer. malfunction? in this confict: if you don’t have video, everything is just saying, nothing more.
