On 10 January 2022, in the late afternoon, official media sources of the Russian Wagner PMC stated that the cirty of Soledar had been captured by Russian units.
Soledar was one of the key points of defence of the AFU in the East of Ukraine. The city is home to Europe’s largest salt production facility.
Evgeny Prigoggin, head of the Wagner PMC, announced:
“Wagner PMC units have taken control of the entire territory of Soledar. A cauldron has been formed in the centre of the city, where urban fighting is taking place. The number of prisoners will be announced tomorrow.
I should like to stress once again that no units other than those of the Wagner Cheka were involved in the storming of Soledar.”
Prigozhin himself was also in the ranks of his warriors in Soledar.
Prigozhin and his soldiers stand at the Salt Mine Museum, which is already closer to the western outskirts of Soledar, confirming full control of the town.
It is currently known that the city, for the most part including the centre, was occupied by Wagner PMC assault groups. The PMC units took all the dominant heights around the city, including Yurchina Mountain, taking direct fire control of the AFU supply roads and outposts. Several hundred more Ukrainian soldiers reportedly remain in the city.
A mopping-up of the city is underway.
The active phase of fighting for Soledar lasted more than four months, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ defences were resistant to regular army units and they were subsequently withdrawn from the front line. It took the Wagner Group just over two weeks to take the city directly.

It’s not just that simple. It was clear to the Russians from the start that the battles for Soledar and Bahmut would have great losses, losses for which the Russian Army would have to answer to someone. That is why the Russian Army more or less led a static fight while the preparation of the mercenaries of the Wagner Group was carried out. Wagner grew up in that period from some 20,000 mostly foot soldiers to one rounded military formation that numbers almost 60,000 soldiers and that has all the military equipment in its formation, including airplanes!

Soledar with it’s underground bases served as an important logistics point for the AFU’s Donbass grouping. The large supply arteries of the Donbass grouping were cut, then Artemovsk and the front would crumble. Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, then the operational space will open up to Kiev, these were the last large fortifications (underground, concrete).
If this line is really the strongest defense the Ukies have, then its crumbling will be a signal to the West that the game is up. That might prompt NATO to try to enter the western parts of Ukraine to salvage what they can for themselves. A big escalation is in the cards if the Russians prove unable to cut them off early on from Belarus.
Erdogan’s minister of defense proposed ukros to stop gunfire. I guess he will propose the same to us (Russia). About strength, defense line Slavyansk-Kramatorsk-Druzhkovka will be very tough too. The cities are larger, thousands of hundreds people of population, it’s closer to Mariupol’ (450 thousands). Soledar and Bahmut/Artyomovsk with Seversk are towns with tens thousands of pre-war population.

Wagner cleared the city in 3 weeks’ time, regular army was trying 4 months, well regular is regular, young boys to stay at outposts to guard or just to guard a line of fire, Wagner consist of the best assault forces that Russia have, they are experienced and brave dogs. They have years of training and active war experiences and that’s why was easy for Wagner to breach this city that fast, killing AFU forces and the western Nato pussies.
