On December 2, the Israeli Army launched between 4 and 6 long range ground-to-ground missiles from its positions in the Golan Heights on several military positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in al-Kiswah district south of the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to Syrian local sources.
Pro-government sources reported that that the Syrian Air Defense Force (SADF) fired several Buk-M2E surface-to-air missiles from its position in the Mezzeh airbase northwest of Damascus to intercept the Israel missiles. The sources said that at least 3 Israeli missiles were successfully intercepted by the SADF. However, these claims are yet to be confirmed.

The supposed Iranian base in Kesweh area around al-Kiswah district and an ammo depot of the SAA 1ST Division were hit by the rest of the Israeli missiles, according to pro-government activists. The BBC had reported that Iran is building a military base in al-Kiswah district back on November 10. However, the BBC report has been never confirmed officially.
Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman threatened to destroy the supposed Iranian base in al-Kiswah, and said that Israel “will not allow the Shi‘ite axis to establish Syria as its forefront base,” on November 12, according to a report of the London-based Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat.
No Syrian or Israeli officials commented on the Israeli missile strike on Damascus city yet.

Point well taken. First off, the pantsir isn’t designed to take on tactical ballistic missiles, while the buk is. Secondly, shooting down a cruise missile is far more embarrassing than having a ballistic missile hit, as cruise missiles use terrain to avoid radar as long as possible, while tactical missiles do not. So this whole story is meant to soften the blow by: 1, misidentifying a modern Sam as the weapon used, to lessen the humiliation of having an older system take out the Israeli missile, and 2: make sure top of the line Israeli cruise missiles maintain their mystique of invincibility by changing the type of missile that was hit.
