On January 10, the Russian military expanded its control to the north of Krasny Liman, mounting more pressure on Ukrainian troops fighting and moving closer towards a victory in the key city of Donets.
The Zapad [West] Group of Forces broke through Ukrainian defenses in Yarova, located 14 kilometers to the north of Krasny Liman along a railway leading to the city.
Initially, it was reported that Russian troops managed to capture up to a half of Yarova. But Ukrainian media later reported that the troops were moving freely within the settlement, suggesting that Kiev forces had withdrawn. Later, it was said that the entire settlement and its outskirts were captured.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet confirmed that the Zapad Group of Forces is in control of Yarova. Nevertheless, such announcements are usually only made after the settlement is fully secured, which could take several days.
The capture of Yarova would completely cut Ukrainian supply lines to the north of Krasny Liman. It would also give the Zapad Group of Forces a better position to observe and target any crossing along the Siverskyi Donets River, to the west of the city.
Just a few days before the breakthrough in Yarova, the Zapad Group of Forces managed to reach the eastern part of Krasny Liman after breaking through a Ukrainian defense line. Russian troops also expanded their control to the south of the city, advancing along the road leading west to Raihorodok. More than 7,5 square kilometers were secured in both areas.

The latest Russian gains to the north, east and south of Krasny Liman show that the combat capabilities of the Ukrainian formations fighting there have deteriorated.
After capturing Yarova, the Zapad Group of Forces will likely focus on Drobysheve, the last settlement before the northern entrance of Krasny Liman. And to the south of the city, Russian troops will likely continue to advance west and attempt to capture Staryi Karavan.
If these two settlements are captured, it will become extremely difficult for Ukraine to supply its troops in Krasny Liman, and by that, to defend the city.
