The first deployment of the Storm Shadow cruise missile by the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet has apparently ended with a failure.
On March 10, two Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4 jets operating out of Akrotiri Air Base in Cyprus launched several Storm Shadow cruise missiles at a cave complex to the southwest of the city of Erbil in northern Iraq, where a significant number of ISIS fighters were hiding.

The strike, which marked the first ever combat use of the Storm Shadow missile by the Typhoon, was widely reported as a complete success.
Nevertheless, Iraqi sources shared on March 23 photos showing the remains of a Storm Shadow missiles that crashed in the subdistrict of Qayara near the western city of Mosul.
The missile failed and crashed dozens of kilometers away from its designated target near Erbil. The UK Ministry of Defence did not report the failure.

The Storm Shadow cruise missile, manufactured by arms giant MBDA, has a range of up to 560 km and is equipped with a sophisticated guidance system.
A variant of the missile known as SCALP EG [Système de Croisière Autonome à Longue Portée – Emploi Général, meaning General Purpose Long Range Cruise Missile] is in active service with the French Air Force. Another sea-launched variant known as MdCN [Missile de Croisière Naval, meaning Naval Cruise Missile] is in service with the French Navy.
While this was the first combat use of the Storm Shadow by the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet, it was not the missile’s first failure.
During the 2018 missile strikes against Syria by the US, UK and France, the missile performance was nothing short from catastrophic. Russia revealed that all eight Storm Shadows launched by British Tornado fighter jets were intercepted. Furthermore, the French Navy failed to launch a number of MdCN missiles.
The repeated failure of the Storm Shadow may be an indication of serious flaws in the missile’s design or mistakes in the manufacturing process.

If these are their successes, cannot imagine their failures. They are totally taking over the word with such a success record.

The missile looks too large, cumbersome and clumsy. It looks like it was made to fail!
It’s hugely expensive also. It almost makes no sense. I partially understand the idea of wanting a stealthy small cruise missile that can be launched from a smaller platform like a fighter jet, but I don’t see it as hugely practical in real war. In a real war against a competent adversary you would benefit more from bigger, stealthy missiles with a large range, that can be launched from a platform capable of carrying many of them. For example, Kh-101 makes perfect sense and is vastly superior. Cruise missiles are after all stand-off weapons and this “Shadow” of a missile seems mediocre precisely in that stand-off application that is supposed to be it’s main goal. If it were cheap, it would have made sense, but it’s far from that. Also, if you are going to use platforms that are lightly armed with just a couple of missiles, they need to be really reliable, because you would face a high complexity to launch a large number of them to compensate for unreliability. The idea of small things is versatility and cost efficiency (e.g., the Russian frigates). This is where this weapon fails badly. Actually, very similarly (even if not as bad) to F-35.
It seams the west is competing on who makes the most mediocre system with F-35, Type45 destroyer or even this Storm Shadow. This missile may only perform well if dropped like a free-fall bomb.

I see the Brits are up to their standard as always. I remember the movie “HELP” by the Beatles and in one scene they were talking about a British gun and the British man said, “British, completely useless, wished I had a Luger!”
Surely “someone” from North East Syria Jammed the GPS and TERPROM of that missile…once the Missile lost position it will automatically fly to a crash point to avoid collateral damage due inaccuracy…
The RAF obviously consider it a success, the missile did leave the aircraft after all.
How far and fast it went is a matter for the British taxpayers, they paid for this tripe. They pay the pilots to drop bombs and fire missiles, so they can either blame the pilot, or the muppet who designed this brick, or maybe ask the guy who proclaimed it a success to show his recently improved bank account what success means to him!
Roughly 2,000km less range than the Kh-55… Kind of negates any stealth when the platform itself is lit up like Blackpool promenade lights.
The West needs to nationalise their defence industries, we just aren’t getting value for money on our munitions or platforms. Nothing works and our moronic politicians keep acting like we could defeat an opponent when we can’t even defend ourselves. Every dollar a MIC company makes in profit is a wasted dollar/pound from our defence budgets.
