British Jets Scrambled To Monitor Russian Strategic Bombers Conducting Patrols In ‘UK Area Of Interest’

On April 3, Typhoon aircraft were scrambled from Royal Air Force Lossiemouth airbase in Scotland to monitor two Russian Tu-160 strategic bombers and their MiG-31 escort that were in “the UK area of interest”, the British military claimed.

“We can confirm that RAF quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth scrambled to monitor two Blackjack bombers [Tu-160] while they were in the UK area of interest. At no point did the Russian aircraft enter UK territorial airspace,” the military told the Russian news agency TASS.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, two Tu-160 strategic bombers, supported by MiG-31 supersonic interceptor aircraft, have performed a flight above the Barents, Norwegian and North seas. The defense ministry added that it in various parts of the flight Norwegian and Dutch F-16 jets were escoring the Russian air group.

A recent increase in activity of Russian strategic bombers followed the deployment of B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers of the US Air Force at Royal Air Force Fairford airbase in the southwestern part of the UK. While this deployment was described by mainstream media and Western diplomats as a ‘peaceful move’,  patros of Russian strategic bombers in neutral areas close to its territory are being viwed by the same persons and outlets as a ‘sign of agression’.
