On July 22nd, UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt briefed the British Parliament on the situation surrounding the UK tanker by Iran and suggested a plan to establish a joint European Task Force to patrol the Persian Gulf and guarantee security against “Iranian aggression.”
While the plan is yet to be adpoted, the British Navy is already boosting its presence in the Persian Gulf region, at least according to British media. For example, reports claimed that the British Navy has sent the Astute-class submarine, which would perform a purely defensive role in the region. The submarine, according to the Sun, will listen in to Iranian communications before passing information back to its operational headquarters at Northwood, in North West London.
Perfect response, the torpedoes lone probably cast the same as about 100 speedboats.

I am not a fan of the British, but your response is a tad bit hysterical. The submarine would engage larger surface ships and fire cruise missiles at land targets, while surface ships engaged speed boats, obviously.
I do not think it is economically viable to hit speed boats with torpedos. Also, while a speed boat may theoretically outran a torpedo, they would never see it coming. Also, no one would fire torpedoes at speed boats.

This is a significant show of strength, though practically, it changes nothing. It would be cool if the iranians used this as an opportunity to learn to track these boats.
Generally I agree with what you said, but, you can see them coming, or going in my case. I watched a few getting tested. The traveling depth is adjustable I believe.

They carry a pair of Kowsar anti shipping missiles. Very similar to the US Navy’s harpoon. Good enough to sink a frigate. The US navy considers the Harpoon it’s top of the line anti-shipping missile but as far as anti shipping missiles go it’s pretty small and slow at mach 0.8. They also carry a pair of torpedos and Iran has 74 of these boats in the Persian Gulf.

I don’t believe the admiralty would allow one of its primary weapons to be put at risk in the Persian Gulf. The Persian Gulf is mostly shallow except for a 100 meter deep strip, and it’s one of the worlds busiest waterways. The chances of being hit by a ship is just too great for what is basically a flag waving exercise.
Exactly, the Persian Gulf is too narrow and shallow for any large nuclear sub. This limey stunt will be based at Diego Garcia and is a PR excercise, not relevant militarily.
I think for it to be any use it has to be carrying nuclear weapons. As i see it the UK is threatening Iran with a nuclear strike. Otherwise its a total joke.

This is a PR stunt, the Persian Gulf is too shallow and narrow for nuclear submarine operations. The limey gits will just float around in the Indian Ocean. In the Persian Gulf Iran is the boss and can sink any ship it pleases if conflict ever broke out.
The British have been the enemy in every single way for the last 800 years on earth. They belong no where but on their island. The torpedoes will come in handy against Iran’s speedboats, ballistic missiles, and mini-subs. If they use their cruise missiles then they will give cause for Iran to block all tanker traffice bound for the U.K.
