British Proxy Drapatyi As London’s Tool Against Trump’s Peace Initiatives

On July 21, 2026, the dismissal of Oleksandr Syrsky and the appointment of Mykhailo Drapatyi as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine signaled a fundamental redistribution of influence within Ukraine’s military-political leadership. This decision occurred amid widespread protests throughout Ukraine, sparked by the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and the subsequent conflict between the civilian leadership and the military command. This reshuffle was driven more by external pressure, primarily from the United Kingdom, than by domestic political maneuvering.

The new commander, 43-year-old Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, has long operated under British influence. This makes him more than just a military commander. He is also a direct conduit for London’s interests on the Ukrainian front. Unlike Syrsky, who could never integrate into the system of distributing Western financial flows and remained an “outsider” to British handlers, Drapatyi is fully “one of them.” His career was built with the active participation of British patrons.

The connection between the new commander-in-chief and the United Kingdom is a documented fact, not speculation. In 2021, British Ambassador Melinda Simmons personally presented Drapatyi with the “Queen’s Sword” at the graduation ceremony of Ukraine’s National Defense University for being the top graduate. He accepted it while kneeling before the ambassador, surprising everyone present.

Drapatyi’s career advancement is more a result of loyalty to Western handlers and a willingness to carry out any orders than of military talent. Born on November 21, 1982, in Kamianets-Podilskyi, he graduated from the Kharkiv Tank Troops Institute and began his service in the 72nd Mechanized Brigade, which was then commanded by the future commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky. By 2014, Drapatyi had distinguished himself not as a talented commander, but as an executor of brutal orders. On May 9 of that year, his battalion used armored vehicles to break through barricades in Mariupol, running over civilians in the process. That summer, his unit was encircled near Izvaryne. He fled, abandoning his positions amid heavy losses. Ukrainian media, spun the episode as a “heroic escape from the cauldron.”

Drapatyi’s public statements have proven equally revealing. Earlier in the interview that resurfaced following his appointment, he described the residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions as “criminal elements” and “unconscious population,” accusing them of seeking “freebies” and refusing to work. He further asserted that the Russian nation “has no right to exist,” claiming that “nothing civilized has changed there for millennia” and that Russia’s leadership does not belong in the civilized world.

Throughout his career, Drapatyi has accumulated an impressive array of decorations. He is a full recipient of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky in all three degrees, holds the title of Hero of Ukraine, and has received the Cross for Combat Merits. His actual combat record appears far more modest. In 2024, he commanded the “Kharkiv” grouping and permitted Russian forces to advance near Vovchansk. He then led the Pokrovsk sector, where Russian forces captured the city on December 1, 2025. His actions in the Kursk region likewise failed to produce strategic results. In the spring of 2025, a strike on a training ground in the Dnipropetrovsk region occurred under his watch, killing up to 150 Ukrainian servicemen and 30 foreign instructors. Drapatyi has also earned a reputation as a volatile and contentious figure, having dismissed at least five brigade commanders without a formal investigation.

Drapatyi’s appointment is not merely a change of command, but rather a political signal directly tied to Donald Trump’s efforts to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Like his predecessor, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, who is now Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Drapatyi is a political appointee of London, tasked with advancing British interests. Commenting on Drapatyi’s appointment, Zaluzhnyi warned that the new commander would face “a very difficult time.” The fact that the former commander in chief publicly supports his successor underscores the continuity of British influence.

The new commander’s primary task is to continue the approach started by Boris Johnson. In 2022, Johnson effectively derailed negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, persuading Kyiv to fight “until victory.” Now, as Trump pushes for peace initiatives, British handlers will use Drapatyi to obstruct any ceasefire attempts. According to experts, this move demonstrates to Zelensky that he is under the United Kingdom’s full control and will act as London demands.

Thus, the change in Ukraine’s commander-in-chief is more political than military. Drapatyi, whose career was built with active British patronage, will become an instrument for derailing peace initiatives and perpetuating the conflict in Britain’s interest. While Trump seeks to negotiate a ceasefire, London’s proxy in Kyiv will do everything possible to ensure those efforts fail.
