Can Western Air Defense Systems Help Kiev Regime Forces?

Launch of Russian Kalibr missiles

The systems will hardly make any groundbreaking contribution, as the Kiev regime already operates longer-range SAMs.

Written by Drago Bosnic, independent geopolitical and military analyst

In late February, the Kiev regime was in possession of one of the largest and most advanced air defense networks in Europe, if not the world. After the Soviet Union’s dismantlement in late 1991, Ukraine inherited approximately 30% of the Soviet military, the largest and the most powerful conventional military force in the world at that point. This provided the then-newly independent country with an extensive air defense network that survived decades of corruption, mismanagement and lack of proper maintenance. After the Western-backed Neo-Nazi coup in 2014, NATO provided billions of dollars’ worth of “military aid” which restored and modernized most of Ukraine’s Soviet-era air defense systems. Still, when Russia launched its special military operation, these SAM (surface-to-air missile) systems failed to produce the desired result.

The number of downed Russian military aircraft was much lower than initially expected. The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) launched hundreds of successful SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) missions, destroying most of the radars and launch sites operated by the Kiev regime forces. Hundreds of variants of older, albeit modernized systems such as the S-300, Buk, Osa, Strela-10, etc. have been destroyed, effectively leaving the Kiev regime without mid to long-range air defenses. As proven by Russia’s recent missile strikes, this has made the Neo-Nazi junta especially vulnerable and unable to protect its critical military infrastructure. In order to tackle this issue, NATO member states have been promising to deliver modern SAM systems. This includes the NASAMS (joint US-Norwegian project) and the German-built Iris-T.

Illustrative Image

During a “Face the Nation” interview with Volodymyr Zelensky that aired Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, on CBS, the Kiev regime frontman confirmed that the NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) has been transferred to the Neo-Nazi junta forces:

“Zelensky thanked the U.S. for the system as well as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems it’s received, but added that his troops absolutely need the United States to show leadership and give Ukraine additional air defense systems it has requested.”

According to The Hill, the Biden administration approved the shipment of six missile systems in late August as part of a nearly $3 billion “lethal aid package”. NASAMS is considered a medium-range system capable of defending against drones, aircraft and cruise missiles at a range of up to 50 km.

Recently, the German Ministry of Defense announced the delivery of at least four Iris-T SL air defense systems to the Kiev regime forces. A military convoy was spotted in the vicinity of the city of Katowice in southern Poland. Reports indicate that it was heading from Germany toward Ukraine. At least three German IRIS-T SLS (the short-range version) SAM systems are seen in the photos that were taken at night. The decision to supply the system was considered back in May, but was postponed several times.

According to the German media, the final decision to send the weapons to the Kiev regime was made on October 10, immediately after Russian missile and UAV strikes hit dozens of critical military targets across Ukraine.

“Russia’s missile strikes on targets in Ukraine show the importance of the early transfer of air defense systems to Kiev,” Defense Minister Kristine Lambrecht said.

However, the timing indicates that the decision to send the IRIS-T SLS was taken much earlier. Still, the Kiev regime doesn’t seem to be content with the current version of this SAM system, as its engagement range of only 12 km is considered subpar. Recent reports indicate that the Neo-Nazi junta is trying to acquire the IRIS-T SLM version, which has an engagement range of approximately 40 km. German media think this variant could be sent to the Kiev regime forces in November if the decision is confirmed by the German MoD. Regardless of what Germany decides, the system will hardly make any groundbreaking contribution, as the Kiev regime already operates longer-range SAM systems.

The primary downsides of the IRIS-T SL are its limited range and the infrared-based guidance system which makes it vulnerable to active counter-measures like flares. They are also unlikely to provide any new capability, as the Neo-Nazi junta forces are already using mid to long-range SAM systems like the aforementioned S-300 and Buk, most of which have been neutralized. What’s more likely is that the German military is providing the air defense systems to test them in combat, particularly in a situation where the enemy has air dominance. Western powers have been sending thousands of short-range air defense systems to the Kiev regime forces even before Russia launched its counteroffensive against NATO’s crawling encroachment on its borders.

So far, NATO countries have sent thousands of MANPADS (man-portable air defense systems), but their impact doesn’t go beyond the tactical level. However, most countries of the political West lack mid to long-range SAM systems which could replace the Kiev regime’s losses, as such systems have never been the focus of the Western style of warfare which is based on the concept of air dominance. Thus, even the somewhat longer-range NASAMS, which uses more advanced radar-guided missiles, is extremely unlikely to hurt Russian forces. This is especially true when it comes to Russian missiles, both low-flying subsonic cruise missiles such as the now-legendary “Kalibr” and the high-flying hypersonic missiles like the “Iskander” or “Kinzhal”. The latter is capable of speeds in excess of Mach 12 (approximately 4 km per second), making it virtually impossible to intercept by any means at NATO’s disposal.

Ukraine’s goose is cooked. Well done.

Now i am hungry, well done

I wonder how many serving, active, military personnel from NATO members have been left lying in the compost of Ukraine and how their Governments are going to handle the losses? Will they even bother explaining to the kiddies and widows left behind, just what happened?

Hmmmm

Sort of tough to explain how your loved ones died fighting along with a bunch of neonazis.

Russia Is Looking Like A Fool!

You live in Fairy-land: the Russian Air-force is a Joke!

Nigel Maund

Idiotic and unsupported commentary is completely worthless. The only person looking like a fool is you!

Good Grief!

They’re flying F-35s now? How’d that happen?

Anyone

Ukraine problems is that they will run out of ammunition for soviet air-defenses soon and they can’t get much more from other countries. That’s the true reason why west wants to send western air-defenses to Ukraine.

I wonder where are: 1- Patriots 2- HAWKs 3-ASTER 4- THAADS. Those systems are/were available in hundreds, only about HAWK, Germany had 39 batteries, Italy 22, France 11 or more. Not talk about USA, of course. So, where are all they now?

Patriots were available to Germany and Holland too, Holland even did a ‘trio’ Stinger/HAWK/Patriot. Instead, we hear about exotic systems like NASAMS (norweygian viking version of AMRAAM, strangely never in service with USA) and IRIS-T (not yet in service with Germany!), while Germany should have still hundreds of Patriots and HAWK atleast in reserve.

Not talk about other systems, still effective, like english Rapiers and franco-German Roland, French Crotale/Shanine and US Chaparralls.

Hell, Germany even refurbished old Gepards, phased out over 10 years ago. Even sent very old Strela ex DDR.

But no Patriots/HAWK delivery yet.

Do you find a bit strange all this? To me it seems totally madness (and good for russian, of course).

Patriots have failed against primitive and slow Houthi drones. Using them in UA could become very embarrassing experience.

V for victory

Well, Patriot is the best the USA can send. Don’t underrate the ‘primitive’ UAV. Sometimes, the slow movers are more difficult to shot down than the faster ones. HAWKs are well known for their effectiveness while one gen older than the Patriots. Still no one came in Ukraine and they had already sent Strela, Mistral, Gepard, Starstreak etc.

To me, it looks that some kind of first rate systems are not allowed to go. Just like the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 never sent to Ukraine, for some reason, while Abrams were exported in Egypt, Arabia and even Irak.

Christopher

All those SAM systems require a lot of trained personnel to man and maintain them, and then they have to be integrated into a defence network. Events on the ground dictate that it’s not going to happen.

AM Hants

How many NATO members can operate a SAMS system, now that Ukraine has so few fully trained and experienced active service members?

AM Hants

Didn’t a patriot, over in Kosovo, back in the 90s end up taking out one of the US military jets? Not forgetting the Saudi oil fields and how the patriots completely failed, when they got hit? Guess, they are looking of a way to make them look good, without alerting the world that they are nothing but duds.

Goran

PATRIOT was never used by Serbian Armed Forces nor Yugoslav Army. Neither KFOR ever used air-defenses against anybody. NATO entered Kosovo after we signed capitulation, not before. All efforts to enter by ground forces were failed, as NATO never sent their own troops in full capacity – they used local KLA fighters, French legion and other PMCs… so, I think you misunderstood some news or mixed up something.

Of course, correct me if I’m wrong.

I guess that from the 39 systems Germany had at least 20 are out of service because the didn’t mantained them and 10-15 of the remaining batteries are lend to support allies like Turkey at the syrian border. In italy the situation might be similiar and France just won’t give up their homeland defense…

patriots? the same that failed in Saudi Arabia? uncle scam doesn’t want to embarrass himself too much

Simple, Simon

Simple. If the front line systems prove ineffective against Russia, their entire export model collapses and so does the US economy, since that’s its major export.

Why do you think the Saudis refused to play ball with Biden, knowing Congress would threaten to withdraw air defense systems? Because that frees them up to buy Russian systems at half the cost and twice the effectivty.

Christ, Saudis can’t even shoot down Houthi drones with patriots. You just know they’re salivating over pantsirs and S-500’s.

Icarus Tanović

The Iranian drones Russia have, cost around 7000 dollars each. A patriot missile or similar to shoot them down cost 1 million dollars each.

Russia can fire off many drones, exhausting the supply of western missiles to shoot them down, and at massive cost to the west.

For the matter, how much do Iranian, North Korean and even Chinese ballistic missles cost to produce? Infinitely, infinitely less than what they cost in the West who don’t even produce tactical ground-launched SSM missles any more. Russia can easily sub-contract its missle production to the above-mentioned countries saving millions on labor costs, if it wants to but I doubt it needs to.

Yes, but it also speaks something, that Russia now feels forced to ask Iran for help because they themthelves have not enough accurately working missiles and drones anymore. It should be the other way around resp. Iranians asking Russia but no – so you see where the russian army truely stands. It is backward, even behind iran and north korea. Yes some special things they have (hypersonics etc.) but the overall military itself is just a bunch of redjacketed murderous rapists and fulltime-drunks. People nobody needs or wants in his country. Instead of attacking other countries and calling those who defend themselves ‘terrorists’ russians should wake up and start getting rid of the real terrorists, resp. the jews. Starting with all the oligarchs and communists, and return to be a proud national Russia led by russians not by jews. (By the way- the Kerch Bridge was build by Putin jewish childhood friend Arcady Rotenberg – another rich jewish oligarch deeply intermingled with Putin, same as Abramowitch or Chabad rabbi and close Putin associate Berel Lazar (.Putins saves jewish lifes and riches, while sending christian poor russians into death in Ukraine. Oh what a great “russian” leader Putin is. Heil my leader, is the Endsieg already near !??

Russia cannot use all the modern arsenal they have at their disposal because as soon as the missiles run out, NATO would intervene militarily with all its potential. Furthermore, Russia is respecting the production times of these missiles, as soon as the stocks are ready it will use them. Meanwhile, welcome to Iran “gift” missiles

The question is how many of the low-flying and the hyper-sonic missiles Russia has, and how fast they can produce them.

If these systems were any good the West would have provided them 8 months ago.

There is no reason why these systems would not have been in place from the start.

Right, and it is a good question. I start by saying that the West doesn’t want this war to go on during winter at all (we all know the reasons).

1. Ukraine has no experience using Western systems and training new troops to use these systems take months. I know the Himars were used by “freedom fighters” from NATO during the first few weeks and still, they have someone from NATO overlooking them.

2. None of the Western air defense systems are “good”, people forgot that Ukraine had a lot of Russian/Soviet air defense systems and they lost most of them. During this whole war, NATO was shopping Russian/Soviet weapons for Ukraine. Now, what does that tell us? The West is running out of weapons and ammo to send to Ukraine and if you look at what the US and NATO have been sending to Ukraine you get the picture. E.g. The US is now sending leftover missiles to Ukraine for their Himars. The British clowns fully know they are running low and start saying that it is Russia that is running low (missiles/rockets/troops/etc). Russia hasn’t even bought any missiles, rockets, drones, etc from China, Iran, or N-Korea.

3. Air defense systems have many layers a few systems wouldn’t work that well… I stop here and end it by saying this, Ukraine as of right now has to use its Russian/Soviet systems, and German ones and I heard that the US is also sending its air defense systems to Ukraine. All those air defense systems are different and use different missiles…

But the West MSM cries about the dead riots in Iran that now they faking in their own countries LMFAO and coping that is Russia running low on ammo/missiles. Oh yeah fuk protests in the EU.

“Russia’s missile strikes on targets in Ukraine show the importance of the early transfer of air defense systems to Kiev,” Defense Minister Kristine Lambrecht said.

German oligarchs and their meat puppet hoes just never learn. If the natural born killers and military titans of Onkel Adolf could never chain the Russian Bear and were subsequently totally annihilated by said Bear then how can this silly old granny with no understanding whatsoever of military affairs and less of the ongoing hybrid war even imagine that her few used “air defense” gadgets (never tested) will even bring the Bear to pause for a second? They are all out of their depth (as designed by the thugs in Washing town) and USSA will throw the occupied province of Germanistan on the pyre of rump Ukrapland when the defeat of Natostan is finally obvious to all. Same as it ever waZ.

Meanwhile in the real world Mother Russia is kicking some serious ass before the final and total collapse of rump Ukrapland.

Here’s a possible ENORMOUS game changer if there is any veracity to the report. A supposed “Russian” aviation/defense blog, but which in reality smacks of open anti-Russian rhetoric, claims that the Ukrainian Mig-29 shot down the other day trying to intercept an Iranian Shahed-136 drone with American missles could have been actually shot down by the Iranian drone itself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woe, woe, woe!!!!

The nato meeting in Brussels has resulted in Canada Holland and other EU countries agreement to send more weapons to the Kiev regime. They are poring petrol on the the fire Not trying to negotiate a peace deal. The new equipment being sent must be destroyed! The factories and facilities making this equipment in Europe and beyond need to be identified for further reference their transit lines for sending such equipment and their suppliers who make it possible for them to produce these weapons. Identified and closed down.

If all the S300s have been destroyed, why is the Russian air force not conducting non stop air sorties and long range strategic bombing in the enemy rear? It frustrates me. They huddle low and are often hit by MANPADs just because they cannot fly high in the 1st place!!!! They do not have enough potent plane based ECM / EW systems and measures to take care of the remaining S300s and Buks, and even if they did, since NATO uses AWACS / AEW / LRAD drones/planes and radars outside of Ukraine (Polish and Romanian border) the S300 would only need to put on its radar for a few seconds, so its really hard to hit them with anti radiation missiles like KH31 and KH58 in such a short timeframe

There was an article about this on topwar and reddit, I had the link to the reddit one and will try and post it later. It explained this is why the RuAF is not even 1/20th at the activity level it should be.

Wonder why Ru not used its abundant obsolete jets and missiles to deplete Ukraine’s air defense stockpile like Azerbaijan did on Armenia.

Azerbaijan had sent many obsolete pilotless old planes to lure Armenia into shooting them down to deplete its SAM. Concurrently, it allowed Turkey’s TB2 drones to pick up positions of Armenia air defense for precision strike.

Szekely from Transylvania

Yes, it can. But only theoretically and virtually limited. Only with a heavy infusion of SAMs which west don’t have now and must be produced, which takes a lot of time. Also, russians will counter that by increasing the hypersonic smart missiles which don’t have any deterrent now and will not have in the next 3-4 years to come. So, Russia already is stock pilling a strategic anti ukro-monkey energy capabilities of those super-missiles in any case they will have to use them for destroying the entire energy grid of ukropizdan bandera shithole. The calculus is extremely simple: they need a 10 day tsunami of strategic bombing to kill 90% of entire production and transport of energy. That means 50 supersonic missiles /day x 10 days= 500 pcs of ukro-nazi dipshit destroyers. Russia don’t have that numbers. I estimate at around 100-150 pcs and a rate of production of 3-5/day. That means somewhere between 4 months max and 2 months to complete the stock. I will take those 2-2.5 months and all the game is over for murican bandera colony. Damocles sword is always on its head. So, the terrorists from NATO knows that any chess move on the battlefield must be done till the end of that year. Otherwise they are DOOMED.
