On December 22, an indirect fire attack targeted a Turkish military base near the town of Dabiq in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.

The base was hit by a salvo of rockets that was reportedly launched from a nearby pocket jointly held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syrian government forces. Syrian activists said that the rocket attack resulted in Turkish casualties. However, this is yet to be confirmed. Usually, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense acknowledges human losses in Syria within 24 hours.

The attack came amid high tension between the Kurdish-led SDF and the Turkish military. On November 20, Ankara launched an air operation against Kurdish forces in Syria and Iraq, codenamed Claw-Sword, in response to the November 13 Istanbul bombing. The SDF’s core faction, the People’s Protection Units, was allegedly involved the terrorist attack.

Since the start of Operation Claw Sword, Turkey has been threatening the SDF with a new invasion of northern Syria. However, pressure from the United States, the main backer of the group, as well as from Russia have reportedly forced Ankara to limits its operation to air and artillery strikes.

The rocket attack on Dabiq base may have been carried out by the SDF in response to a Turkish drone strike that hit the village of Raqqas in the northern Raqqa countryside on December 17. Three civilians, including a child, were killed in the strike.

The SDF and its affiliates have been attempting to deter Turkey by targeting its bases in the northern Aleppo countryside for a few months now. However, these attacks appear to be only provoking Ankara.
