On July 7, another rocket attack targeted Ain al-Assad Air Base, where US troops are known to be deployed, in the western Iraqi province of al-Anbar.

On Twitter, Col. Wayne Marotto, a spokesman for the US-led coalition, said that the base was attacked with 17 rockets. According to the spokesman, the rockets landed inside the base and in its perimeter causing two injures.

“Two personnel sustained minor injuries. Damage still be assessed,” Col. Marotto said. “ More details will be provided when become available.”

The rockets were reportedly fired from an improvised launcher installed in the back of a truck that was parked near a mosque in the district of al-Baghdadi to the northeast of Ain al-Assad Air Base. The district was reportedly shelled by US forces after the attack.

A newly-formed pro-Iranian group calling itself the “al-Muhandis Revenge Brigades” claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. In a statement, the group revealed that Ain al-Assad Air Base was targeted with 30 Grad 122 mm rockets.

The group is named after Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the former deputy-commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units, who was killed along with Iran’s Quds Force Commander, Qassem Soleimani, in a US drone strikes near Baghdad International Airport on January 3 of 2020.

Ain al-Assad Air Base was targeted nearly two hours after a drone attack on a key US base in Syria’s northeastern region.

The recent attacks on US troops in Iraq and Syria increased pressure on Washington, which is still determined to maintain military presence in both countries.

According to U.S. military doctrine if you die in the medevac helo or in the hospital its not a casualty, you are only counted if you due on the battlefield. For that reason casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan should be multiplied with around 4-5 to get the real casualties number. Same as in Nam by the way… Its not a new trick.

The US is just like israel when it comes to being dishonest about casualties. Good thing is, the rocket attacks and IEDs are being documented better by the popular resistance forces, and the attacks themselves are getting more effective.

The US refuses to withdraw occupation forces in Iraq or Syria – despite request from both those governments to do so. Whilst these attacks in Iraq have had marginal impact so far – they do show that US is over-extended in region and has difficulty securing its far flung locations and logistic routes. The Iraqi factions undertaking these attacks are – applying pressure to show the US is vulnerable (for other regional Arabs as much as US), and, probing for means to successfully attack through US security provisions. The longer the attacks occur the more likely it is they will either find a methodology that works, or just get one-time-lucky, with potential for casualties that would have big impact in US.
