On February 12, a Turkish combat drone targeted a vehicle near the northern Syrian town of Kobane, a stronghold of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The vehicle, a mini truck, was reportedly passing on a road leading to the village of Mnaz, a few kilometers to the west of Kobane, when it was struck.
The SDF-linked Hawar News Agency shared footage showing the aftermath of the strike which knocked the vehicle to the side of the road. From its side, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the strike resulted in casualties, without elaborating.
Such drone strikes usually target commanders of the SDF or officials of the group’s so-called Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.
The Turkish military has reportedly carried out nine attacks with combat drones and loitering munitions on positions and vehicles of the SDF in northern and eastern Syria since the start of the year. The attacks killed four personnel of the SDF and three civilians.
The new drone strike came just less than a week after a devastating earthquake that hit several parts of central and southern Turkey as well as northern and western Syria. More than 34,000 people in both countries were killed.
The SDF and affiliated Kurdish forces didn’t cease their attacks on Turkish-occupied areas in northern Syria to facilitate rescue and aid operations. The Turkish military and its proxies also launched several attacks against the group’s territory after the disaster.
