On March 30, two separate attacks targeted government service members in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.
The first attack saw unidentified gunmen opening fire at a group of policemen near the town of Dael in the northern countryside of Daraa. The shooting attack claimed the lives of two officers and wounded two others.
Minutes later, the second attack took place in the town of Izraa, which is also located in Daraa’s northern countryside. An explosion, that was likely caused by an improvised explosive device, rocked the town’s recruitment center. Several soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army were reportedly killed or wounded as a result of the attack.
There was no immediate claim for any of the two attacks. Terrorists affiliated with ISIS are known to be present and active in the northern countryside of Daraa.
Daraa remains far from being stable. The governorate has been experiencing a surge in violence for quite some time now.
According to a recent report by the London-based Observatory for Human Rights, 114 attacks have taken place in Daraa since the beginning of the year. The attacks claimed the lives of 52 civilians, 33 government service members and pro-government fighters, five ex-rebels, a former member of ISIS and three unidentified people.
The situation in Daraa will not likely improve soon. Syrian government forces are still cautious about implementing strict security measures in the governorate.
