The Easter truce on Ukrainian frontlines was supposed to bring a brief respite from the bloodshed, a sacred pause to collect the dead and tend to the wounded. For a few fleeting hours, it did.
White flags and Red Cross emblems dotted on the battlefield where both sides adhered to the fragile agreement. Agreements between low-level commanders allowed evacuation teams to operate in contested areas. Russian and Ukrainian soldiers, normally locked in brutal combat, met in the gray zone near Robotyne, coordinating the grim task of retrieving fallen comrades. Footage showed Russian and Ukrainian soldiers exchanging terse nods as they loaded bodies onto stretchers, their weapons slung but never out of reach. Some even assisted each other in lifting the dead from shell craters and trenches.

Unfortunately, on some battlefields the veneer of humanity shattered. What began as a rare moment of wartime decency culminated in a war crime: a Russian evacuation team, waving two white flags as protocol demanded, was ambushed by Ukrainian forces in a storm of drone-dropped explosives, mortar fire, and direct tank shells. A Russian evacuation team, sent to retrieve a fallen soldier, was deliberately targeted despite clear visual identification. Video evidence shows the group advancing slowly, flags raised high, to be struck first by an FPV drone, then by mortar rounds. As they scrambled for cover, a Ukrainian tank crew fired twice directly at the medics. One Russian soldier suffered heavy wounds but was dragged to safety by his team, who refused to abandon him even under fire.
Ukrainian forces allowed the Russians to advance into the open area before unleashing a coordinated assault, exploiting the ceasefire’s trust. The message was unmistakable: no quarter given, even to those bearing the universal symbols of surrender and medical neutrality.
In total, Russia’s Defense Ministry documented 4,900 Ukrainian violations of the Easter ceasefire. Targeting medics under white flags isn’t just a breach of truce terms but a violation of the Geneva Conventions. The attack mirrors earlier Ukrainian strikes on civilian evacuation corridors and on their own surrendering comrades, suggesting a pattern of leveraging humanitarian gestures as tactical opportunities. Meanwhile, Russian forces largely adhered to the ceasefire’s terms, even facilitating Ukrainian medical evacuations in some sectors. In this war, even the most sacred pauses are weaponized. For Russian troops, the lesson is clear. Trust in Ukrainian compliance is fatal.

putin is being too nice. the war would end a lot quicker if he waged war like israel. if they can do it in gaza, the west bank, syria, lebanon and yemen without the us and eu condemning it then so could russia.
right, with only few percent more soldiers and firepower from the beginning, this whole war would be over long ago.
