A official of ISIS who was wounded in the July 12 US drone strike on the northern countryside of Aleppo which claimed the life of the terrorist group’s leader in Syria Maher al-Akal had died, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on July 14.
The CENTCOM said that the man was “a senior ISIS official closely associated with Maher”. He died of the wounds he sustained as a result of the strike.
Al-Akal and the man in question were travelling on a motorcycle in the district of Jandaris, which is located in the Turkish-occupied area of Afrin, when they were targeted by a US combat drone. The identity of the man is yet to be revealed.
At the time of the strike, al-Akal and his comrade were both carrying fake identification cards issued by the Local Council of Afrin City, a local authority backed by Turkey and protected by its proxies.
President Joe Biden praised the drone strike that killed al-Akal, claiming that it will significantly degrades the ability of ISIS to plan, resource, and conduct their operations in the Middle East.
The US main proxy in Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), claimed that al-Akal was involved in the 2014 al-Shaitat tribe massacre in Deir Ezzor and that he was the mastermind behind ISIS’s large-scale attack on al-Hasakah prison last February.
Al-Akal was the second senior leader of ISIS to be killed in Syria this year. In February, a US raid on the northwestern region of Greater Idlib saw the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, the overall leader of the terrorist group.
