On March 2, at least 48 civilians who were hunting for truffles in Syria’s central region were killed or wounded in two separate attacks that were blamed on ISIS.
In the western Deir Ezzor countryside, a landmine hit a truck transporting dozens of civilians to a desert area near the town of Kobajjep where truffles are harvested. The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that the landmine was planted by ISIS. The blast killed five and wounded at least 40 others.
The second attack took place in the eastern Hama countryside. Three truffle hunters were shot and killed by ISIS terrorists in the area of Duizin, according to the SANA.

ISIS terrorists killed or wounded dozens of civilians who were hunting for expensive truffles in different parts of the central region last month.
On February 11, four people were killed and ten others were wounded when they were attacked by terrorists while collecting truffles to the south of the ancient city of Palmyra in the eastern Homs countryside. On February 18, the terrorists massacred 45 civilians who were collecting truffles from the southeastern outskirts of al-Sukhnah town in the eastern Homs countryside along with eight security personnel who were guarding them. Later on February 27, two landmines planted by the terrorists killed ten truffle hunters and wounded 12 others near the town of Salamiyah in the eastern Hama countryside.
The terrorist group has not officially claimed responsibility for any of these recent attacks, likely because the main motive behind them was looting.
Syrian government forces and their allies are yet to respond to ISIS’s recent attacks in the central region. Only a large-scale military operation in the region could push the terrorist group’s cells away from urban centers and secure key roads once again.
