On September 29, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out more than 50 airstrikes on Syria’s central region where ISIS cells have been waging an insurgency against government forces.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the airstrikes targeted fortified hideouts of the terrorist group between the eastern Homs countryside and the eastern countryside of Hama.
The airstrikes were carried out in support of a new combing operation by the Syrian Arab Army and its allies. The operation will cover the desert area between Homs and Hama.
Last week, ISIS cells in central Syria stepped up their attacks. On September 26, six fighters of the pro-government Palestinian al-Quds Brigade were killed in an attack that took place near al-Amour mountains in the eastern Homs countryside.
While the terrorist group’s cells in the central region managed to inflict some losses on Syrian government forces and their allies in the last few years, they failed to expand their influence outside the region.
Currently, ISIS terrorists are situated far from all main urban centers and strategic roads in central Syria. Nevertheless, the threat posed by the group shouldn’t be underestimated.
