Central Syria: Airstrikes Targeted ISIS Hideouts In Raqqa, Reinforcements Deployed In Homs

The Russian Aerospace Forces and Syrian government forces continue to operate against ISIS cells in Syria’s central region.

On March 26, Russian warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on the government-held part of the southern Raqqa countryside.

The airstrikes hit a number of caves and dens in the outskirts of the town of al-Resafa, where ISIS terrorists had been taking shelter. It’s still unclear whether the strikes caused any damage or casualties.

A day earlier, the Syrian Military Intelligence Directorate and National Defense Forces deployed reinforcements in the eastern countryside of Homs.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the large reinforcements were deployed in the outskirts of al-Sukhnah to improve the town’s defenses against ISIS cells which are known to be active in nearby areas.

“The reinforcements consisted of 11 4×4 vehicles armed with heavy machine guns, in addition to personnel and ammunition,” the London-based monitoring group said in a report.

ISIS cells in central Syria stepped up their attacks on government forces and civilians early on in March. More than two dozen people were reportedly killed by the terrorists in less than a month. Most of the casualties were pro-government fighters.

The situation in central Syria improved over the last week. However, there are no signs that ISIS’ insurgency in the region will end anytime soon.
