Central Syria: ISIS Cells Attack Intelligence Post In Deir Ezzor, Receive Russian Strikes In Raqqa

On January 12, ISIS cells attacked a post of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence Directorate (AFID) near the town of al-Kashmah in the southern countryside of Deir Ezzor.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, three officers of the AFID were killed and five others were wounded as a result of the attack. The victims were identified by local sources as Fadi Saud al-Satm, Ahmad Nasir al-Hafi and Mahmoud al-Khalef al-Ismail.

“The group’s [ISIS] members took advantage of the fog and carried out the attack,” the London-based monitoring group said in its report.

Meanwhile in the southern countryside of Raqqa, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out more than 40 airstrikes on ISIS hideouts in the outskirts of the town of al-Resafa. No losses were reported, however.

More than 205 Russia airstrikes have reportedly struck ISIS terrorists, equipment and hideouts in central Syria since the beginning of 2022.

Despite heavy pressure by Syrian government forces and their allies, ISIS insurgency in the central region is still going strong. Most of the terrorist group’s recent attacks took place in the deserts of Deir Ezzor and Raqqa. The group appears to be moving away from the harsh desert of Homs.

The situation in central Syria will not likely improve without a large-scale operation. Government forces and their allies are reportedly preparing to kick off such an operation.
