Central Syria: Landmine Explosion Killed Or Wounded Nine Pro-Government Fighters

On September 23, three pro-government fighters were killed and six others were wounded while taking part in a combing operation in central Syria as a result of a landmine explosion, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The London-based monitoring group said that the incident took place in the outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern countryside of Homs. The landmine was allegedly planted by ISIS cells.

One of the three men killed in the incident was reportedly a commander of the National Defense Forces’ local branch in Homs.

ISIS cells in central Syria managed to inflict some losses on government forces and their allies on several occasions in the last few weeks.

On September 9, an attack that was allegedly carried out by the terrorist group claimed the life of a Russian service member who was later identified as 45-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Alexei Schneider.

The Russian Aerospace Forces responded with a series of airstrikes that targeted ISIS hideouts and equipment in central Syria. At least six terrorists were killed.

Despite much efforts by Syrian government forces and their allies, ISIS is still entrenched in the central region, mainly in the Homs desert. Hundreds of terrorists have been reportedly taking shelter in the desert area that lays between eastern Homs and western Deir Ezzor.
