Central Syria: Russian Airstrikes Hit ISIS Caves In Southern Raqqa

On October 9 morning, yet another wave of Russian airstrikes targeted ISIS’s areas of influence in the central region of Syria.

Two fighter bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out at least four airstrikes on the outskirts of the town of al-Resafa in the southern countryside of the Raqqa. The targets were reportedly caves where ISIS cells had been taking shelter. The exact results of the airstrikes are yet to be revealed.

Over the past year, most of ISIS cells in the central region moved from the eastern countryside of Homs to the southern Raqqa countryside. The terrorists are likely focusing on the area because of its proximity to the northeastern region, where the presence of their group is the strongest.

In a recent report by its official newspaper, al-Naba, ISIS revealed that its cells in Raqqa carried out at least 20 attacks between July 30 and October 5. Many of these attacks targeted Syrian government forces in the southern countryside of the governorate.

The recent Russian airstrikes and Syrian ground operations in the southern countryside of Raqqa inflicted heavy human and material losses on ISIS’s remaining cells there. However, the terrorist group presence in the area will not likely end without a large-scale military campaign.
