On April 28, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out at least ten airstrikes on ISIS’s areas of influence in Syria’s central region.
The airstrikes targeted hideouts of the terrorist groups in:
- The outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern Homs countryside;
- The outskirts of the town of Ithriyah in the eastern Hama countryside;
- The outskirts of the town of al-Resafa in the southern Raqqa countryside;
- The western desert of Deir Ezzor.
The airstrikes were likely a response to a recent attack by ISIS cells on positions of Syrian government forces in the eastern countryside of Homs. The attack, which took place on April 27, was a complete failure. No casualties or material losses were reported.
ISIS kicked off a military campaign codenamed “The Battle of Revenge for the Killing of the Two Sheikhs” in the Levant and several other regions across the world on April 17 to avenge its former leader and spokesman who died during a US raid in Syria’s northwestern region in February.
So far, the terrorist group’s revenge campaign has inflicted some heavy losses on the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in northeastern Syria. However, in central Syria the group’s cells have not launched any meaningful attack as of yet.
The situation in central Syria is slowly improving thanks to the efforts of government forces and their allies. Despite this, ISIS insurgency in the region will not likely end any time soon.
