Central Syria: Third ISIS Cell Eliminated Near Homs-Deir Ezzor Highway (Photos)

On January 28, the Syrian Arab Army and pro-government factions eliminated another ISIS cell near the Homs-Deir Ezzor highway, the M20.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the cell took part in several recent attacks on service members and civilians traveling on the M20 highway. The cell’s three members were all killed by the army.

“The operations also resulted in the destruction of a 4×4 vehicle armed with a machine gun and the discovery of one of the terrorists’ hideouts,” the SANA’s reporter in the central region said.

Pro-government sources released photos of the cell’s hideout where loads of medical supplies and other equipment were stored.

This was the third ISIS cell, which was eliminated by Syrian government forces near the M20 highway this week. On January 26 and 27, Syrian troops eliminated two other ISIS cells. A total of 8 terrorists were killed.

Earlier this month, government forces launched a large-scale operation to secure the Homs-Deir Ezzor highway with direct support from the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The strategic highway, which links central Syria with the eastern region, is currently open and secure. Nevertheless, the ISIS threat is still present.
