On July 9, a commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in an attack by ISIS cells in central Syria.
Syrian sources claimed that the commander, Reza Safdari, was killed when his vehicle was struck with an improvised explosive device that had been planted by ISIS terrorists. The incident reportedly took place in the eastern countryside of Homs.

The IRGC has been actively supporting Syrian government operations in the central region since the beginning of ISIS insurgence there around three years ago.
Safdari was not the first Iranian military advisor to get killed in central Syria this year. On June 3, military advisor Hassan Abdullahzadeh was killed along with his guard Mohsen Abbasi in an ambush by ISIS terrorists on the Homs-Deir Ezzor highway.
Russia has been also supporting the ongoing operations in central Syria. The Russian Aerospace Forces target ISIS cells on a regular basis.
In the last three days only, more than 70 Russians airstrikes hit the terrorist group’s hideouts in the region, according to Syrian sources.
Despite immense military pressure by Syrian government forces and their allies, ISIS cells continue to launch attacks in the central region. More time and effort are needed to end the terrorist group’s presence in the region.
