On September 7, ISIS cells in Syria’s central region carried out a large-scale attack against the Syrian Arab Army and its allies in the eastern countryside of Homs.

The attack targeted a network of positions located to the east of the town of al-Sukhnah, right on the administrative border with Deir Ezzor. ISIS terrorists clashed with pro-government fighters for a few hours then withdrew back to their hideouts.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, six pro-government fighters were killed and eight others were wounded as a result of the attack.

“Some of those [wounded in the attack] are in a critical condition, which suggests that the death toll will rise,” the London-based monitoring group said in a report.

Three days earlier, a similar attack by ISIS cells targeted a number of positions near the town of Ithriyah in the eastern countryside of Hama. The attack claimed the lives of eight Iranian-backed fighters who were backing pro-government forces.

ISIS’ recent attacks in central Syria didn’t go unpunished. In the last few days, Russian warplanes carried out dozens of airstrikes on ISIS hideouts the region. At least nine terrorists were killed.

Syrian government forces and their allies have been operating against ISIS cells in the central region for more than two years now. The terrorist group’s insurgency slowed down this year. Yet, it will not likely end soon.
