The Chadian military has launched a “massive” operation against Boko Haram remnants around Lake Chad in response to a recent attack by the terrorist group that claimed the lives of dozens of soldiers.

The brutal attack, which took place on March 23, targeted a military camp in the area of Boma, located in the country’s western province of Lac. At least 98 soldiers were killed in the attack, while dozens others were injured.

The country’s Defense Minister, Mahamat Abali Salah, announced the launch of “Operation Boma’s Wrath” on March 31 in response to Boko Haram’s attack.

“Our purpose is to clear the area around Lake Chad from terror. We will continue to share the details of the operation,” minister Salah said in a televised speech, according to the Anadolu Agency.

In the course of the operation, five companies of soldiers were deployed in Niger and Nigeria with the approval of these countries. Lac was also announced a “military zone.” Civilians were ordered to leave the province for the time being.

On April 4, the Chadian military announced that five Boko Haram bases around Lake Chad were destroyed as a part of Operation Boma’s Warth. Local sources claimed that dozens of the group’s terrorists were also killed.

Boko Haram intensified its attacks around Lake Chad over the last few months. The ISIS-affiliated group appears to be focusing on Nigeria and Chad. Both countries are taking action against the terrorist group. However, more coordinated efforts are needed.
