On July 26, a coalition of local factions in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Suwayda led by the Sheikh al-Karama Forces launched a large-scale offensive on al-Fajir Forces, an armed group accused of committing several serious crimes.
The al-Fajir Forces, which is led by Raji Falhout, was recently accused of abducting and torturing a number of civilians. The decision to neutralize the group by force was reportedly taken after it violated a cessation of hostilities, which was brokered by prominent Druze leaders.
The large-scale offensive targeted the main stronghold of the Fajir Forces, the town of Atil in the northern countryside of al-Suwayda.
The Sheikh al-Karama Forces, which are known to be opponents of the government, alleged that the al-Fajir Forces are a proxy of the Syrian Military Intelligence Directorate. However, the directorate didn’t make any move to protect the group or its leader. Furthermore, the Syrian semi-official Al-Watan newspaper called the group’s fighters “terrorists”.
On the first day of the battle, the local factions managed to storm the headquarters of the al-Fajir Forces as well as most of the group’s positions in Atil and in nearby areas. The next day, the battle ended with the capture of Falhout’s private compound in the town.
Falhout himself was reportedly captured by the local factions, along with a number of his fighters. The battle has reportedly claimed the lives of 17 fighters from both sides and wounded at least 35 others.
The religious leadership of the Druze sect in al-Suwayda blessed the offensive on the al-Fajir Forces. Meanwhile, the government has not commented on the situation in the governorate.
The Al-Fajir Forces involvement in ransom-kidnaping, murder and drug trafficking is well known. Nevertheless, many of the factions that attacked the group, including the Sheikh al-Karama Forces, are said to be involved in similar criminal activities. The group may have been singled out because of its stand with the government and its participation in a recent operation against the US-affiliated Counter Terrorism Force.
Overall, the recent events in al-Suwayda indicate that the government is losing its grip on the governorate. Pro-opposition factions there are growing, and appear to be now enjoying at least some support from the local religious leadership. Recent reports also talked about some support from the US, and even Israel.
The situation in the al-Suwayda could deteriorate further in the near future. Some in the governorate have already begun to call for a “self-administration”.
