Late on November 17, seven rockets were launched at the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, where the U.S. embassy is located.
In a statement, the Iraqi Security Media Cells revealed that three of the rockets landed outside the Green Zone. One of the rockets hit the Medical City and another landed next to al-Zawr’a park.
The third rocket, however, exploded in the air likely after being intercepted by the U.S. military’s C-RAM [counter rocket, artillery, and mortar] system.
According to Iraqi authorities, the rocket attack on the Green Zone claimed the life of a child and wounded at least five other civilians.
The rockets were launched from an improvised launcher that was installed in the trunk of a Kia mini truck parked in the 2nd al-Amin district. The launcher had nine 122 mm tubes. It means that Grad rockets were used in the attack.

According to Iraqi sources, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq – ‘Ashab al-Kahf claimed responsibility for the rocket attack. The pro-Iranian group is yet to confirm this in an official statement.
The rocket strike was the most recent in a series of attacks targeting U.S. diplomats and troops in Iraq. The attacks are meant to force the U.S. to withdraw from Iraq. Washington has already announced a plan to pull 500 troops out of the country.
Earlier this year, several Shiite armed groups vowed to expel U.S. troops from Iraq following the assassination of Quds Force Commander Qassim Soleimani and Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
