According to the photos, analyzed by retired Indian Army Colonel Vinayak Bhat for The Print, China may be building a new class submarine.
The nuclear submarines of China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy have all been constructed at Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Company Limited (BSHIC) at Huludao.
Recent photos of Huludao facilities revealed some parts, possibly of a new submarine. The width of these parts is almost 16.5 m, suggesting the probable beam of the new submarine is more than 16.5 m. It is assessed that this new submarine which possibly is the new nuclear submarine of Type 96 which is rumored to have 24x Julang 3 or JL 3 ballistic missiles with an estimated range between 8,000 km to 12,000 km. A 16.5 m beam with approximately 4 m of hump would easily accommodate every Dong Feng or DF missile in China’s nuclear ballistic missiles inventory.
The Huludao facility felt the need for additional space when it started construction of Type 94 Jin-class submarines some time in 2005. The new facility on the Eastern side of Bohai shipyard started construction in mid-2015, and became visible and clear by mid-2016.
The size of BSHIC Huludao hall is 285 m x 130 m with more than 40,000 sq m area. The height is almost double the previous halls in that location. It has three bays with large overhead double girder magnet gantry cranes fitted it, which could easily shift/move submarine modules. The width of girders at the top of gantries is 9 m, suggesting they could lift very heavy loads.
There is another hall of 200 m x 170 m being constructed to the north of this assembly hall. This probably will produce modules for submarines. It has five bays, two of which are smaller than others. Both the halls have traverser rails in front for transfer of modules from one hall to the other.
This new assembly hall could possibly construct six nuclear submarines at any given time. It is assessed that the new submarine production facility constructed at Huludao will enhance the speed of the Chinese nuclear submarine production by at least six times.
China’s nuclear submarines or SSN count varies from 11 to 13 with four Type 91 Han-class (one not active) and 8 to 10 Type 93 Shang-class variants. The nuclear ballistic missiles carrying submarines or SSBN count is at least 7, with one Type 92 Xia-class and rest Type 94 Jin-class.
Carrier busting submarine drones. Too easy not to.
Thats not the primary function of a boomer submarine…
Ofc not, the US never needed weapons of that type. But as the whole US projection of might around the world centers on its carriers, they are the thing to counter for a possible foe.
Well, the aircraft carriers are there to bully weak countries. They bring an air-force to a country’s waters without the need for any co-operation from anyone. Can’t do that to China, or any strong country with a capable missile inventory. US strategic missile submarines are there to threaten stronger countries. So this may be China’s parallel response along MAD lines, or a stratagem to take on US submarine force.
Chinese submarines are slightly noisier than russian submarines and are easy to track…
Maybe this one won’t be? I mean, the Chinese have plenty of money and plenty of engineers to throw at this problem. And if that won’t work out there has never been a shortage of Americans willing to sell out such secrets for cash. After all, becoming rich is the American Dream. It’s what the USSR used to do.
The problem is nuclear propulsion is impossible to make quiet enough to defeat our SOSUS net…
You would have to switch to diesel electric or something more exotic like a fuel cell based system like the german type 212.
SOSUS can hear rain fall on the sea but didn’t hear an MH airliner hit the water?
Ur asking the way wrong dude. Besides, why all of a sudden did the search parties start going out in the middle of nowhere towards the south for no other outwardly apparent reason?
Please tell me, why?
What from 8,000 km to 12,000 km; doubtful.
???
If they shoot their miles off from 10,000 Km, it wouldn’t matter if hey were banging on the walls with hammers.
bolter told, what i meant. there is american warning system, covert all oceans. completely. they know, where is the enemy. from the beginning are foolowed these strategic submarines by hunter submarines. immediately would destroy them, if open too much covers for missiles.
Got it cheers.
What about an EMP and then a missile strike from 10,000 KM ?
emp? as i know will not harm the sonars. they are deep located. for emp in high altitude you mast tke there the warhead. and the early warning system will do everything to stop this step :)
i think, china needs 2, maybe 3 decades to be “feared” enemy.
Could be a ruse too, I imagine making a few parts and laying them out in plain view of satellites isn’t protocol when building nuclear submarines. Either someone fucked up or they deliberately left those parts there to be photographed.
China’s maritime protection goals resemble England’s needs for the 19- through mid 20th century. Capable enemies can interdict shipping lanes and cause havoc with the life lines extending thousands of miles.
China has to built many submarines with balistic missiles . Is the only way to avoid agressives intention of USA. And China has not limitations as Russia in submarine quantities.
