China has successfully tested a multipurpose unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the new generation, the Wing Loong II, also known as the Pterodactyl II. As the Phoenix TV-channel reported on Tuesday, the drone, whose wingspan is over 20 meters, performed its maiden flight in a mountainous region in the northwestern part of the country on Monday. The UAV stayed aloft for about an hour.

“China has become the second country after the United States, capable to develop UAVs of this type,” chief designer of the new drone, Li Idun, said.

The wingspan (20.5 meters) and the length (11 meters) make the Chinese drone comparable with the US MQ-9 Reaper. It can be equipped with air weapons, which are designed to be placed on its underwing pylons.

The Pterodactyl II is able to fly at a height up to 9,000 meters and stay in the air without refueling for 20 hours, moving at a speed of up to 370 kilometers per hour. Its take-off weight is of 4.2 tons.

Reportedly, foreign buyers had showed serious interest in placing orders for purchase of the drone before the start of its tests. According to experts, the Chinese UAV is expected to be much cheaper than its western analogues.

Does anyone know how it’s going for Russia’s large drone program? I think Mig corporation, developed one by the name Skat UCAV, if i can recall it correctly?

Toni Liu

Yes they created skat ucav, but somehow they cancelled it to make a new one and maybe had same fate in the future like black eagle that transform to t 14 , and seems russian give more secrecy in their uav drone program than their land drone because I never seen any picture about their drone that had weapon on their wings, most of them just for surveilence like in syria

Daniel Martin

Ok thx for the info. I think though that i saw a picture if the Skat with a fairly large bomb of some kind, probably LGB or SGB.

This is China related. China’s claim it has ‘quantum’ radar may leave $17 billion F-35 naked http://www.news.com.au/technology/innovation/inventions/chinas-claim-it-has-quantum-radar-may-leave-17-billion-f35-naked/news-story/207ac01ff3107d21a9f36e54b6f0fbab

I do not understand the physics here or if this is smoke and mirrors but this is not the usual low frequency radar approach to defeating stealth. If anyone understands the theory behind this technology and would like to comment, I’d appreciate it. They claim high precision tracking up to 100km.

Solomon Krupacek

below 400 km is for nothing. moreover, the radar is not enough. th million dollar qiestion is: will “see” the missile the target, too?

Yrreiht

I’m engineer and this is not a scientific article … dubious claims and downright BS (knowing what carry the plane thanks to this radar, haha !). Is there a piece of truth in it ? I don’t know.

Solomon Krupacek

1st too much nails :)

2nd SF, do not enjoy modern chinese weapons. within 20 years miriads of them will attack siberia.
