Heavy clashes between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the remaining ISIS fighters are still ongoing near the town of al-Baghuz al-Fawqani in the Middle Euphrates River Valley, the Kurdish Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported on March 20.
“The SDF’s Special Forces are storming the small al-Baghuz [pocket] … Some mercenaries are surrendering themselves around al-Baghuz,” the ANHA’s reporter said.
A day earlier, US-backed forces announced that they had captured a large camp north of al-Baghuz al-Fawqani from ISIS. This left the remaining terrorists with few positions crammed within dozens of square meters along the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
The SDF’s advance forced more than 1,000 fighters of ISIS to surrender in the last 24 hours, according to a report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The UK-based monitoring group said that the Kurdish-dominated group is now combing the liberated camp and removing any weapons or explosives that had been left behind by the terrorists.
The battle in the Euphrates Valley will likely end in a few days, if not hours, as the remaining terrorists are suffering from heavy loses and the lack of resources.
