Clashes Broke Out Between Yezidi Forces And Iraqi Military In Sinjar (Video)

On December 12, clashes broke out between fighters affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and soldiers of the Iraqi Armed Forces. The fighting was a result of a demonstration carried out by the Kurds in northern Iraqi region.

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), PKK-linked Sinjar Resistance Units (YBŞ) clashed with the Iraqi military and set an Iraqi tank on fire, after trowing a molotov cocktail at an armored vehicle. Two people were injured as a result of the clashes and the attack resulted in the retreat of the Iraqi military from the area.

The rally was a result of drone strikes by the Turkish Air Force in the region.

On November 7, a Turkish UAV struck a vehicle in the town of Sinjar in the Iraq’s northern Nineveh Governorate. According to local sources, two people were killed as a result of the attack. One of the victims was identified as Mervan Bedel, field commander of the Yezidi Sinjar Resistance Forces (YBS).

Shortly after Turkish drone killed a senior Sinjar politician, the Yazidi province of Sinjar was bombed once again on December 12, and the People’s Assembly building in Khana Sor was destroyed. Thus, the ange among the locals grew up significantly. Following this strike, the Kurds issued an order to suspend the activities of all government and non-governmental departments in Sinjar.

The YBS is aimed to protect the Iraqi Yezidis from ISIS attacks. Today, its members are part of the Iraqi armed forces as the 80th Hashd Shaabi Regiment. The YBS has been closely associated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. This was the reason why at the beginning of 2021, the Iraqi military leadership demanded that the YBS fighters leave their positions in Northern Iraq. However, the YBS members refused to leave. Their close ties to the PKK are also the reason why the YBS leaders are targeted by Turkish forces.
