Clashes Return To Libyan Capital As Government Crisis Deepens

On September 2, a new round of clashes broke out in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, between forces loyal to Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, head of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, and others supporting Fathi Bashagha, the claimed interim prime minister.

The Libyan media said that the clashes took place in the southwestern outskirts of Tripoli between the 3rd Regiments, which is loyal to Dbeibeh, and the pro-Bashagha 55th Battalion. The clashed claimed the life of a man and wounded at least three others.

Dbeibeh described the clashes, which came to an end early on September 3, as an attempt to seize power by the forces supporting Bashagha.

The Libyan government crisis began in February. Back then, Bashagha was selected as prime minister-designate by the eastern-based Libyan House of Representatives. Dbeibeh rejected Bashagha’s appointment, stating that he will only hand power after a national election.

The crisis turned violent late in August when Bashagha reiterated his desire to enter Tripoli and assume office. Dbeibeh responded by placing his forces in the capital on high alert.

Tripoli experienced fierce clashes between August 27 and 28. Forces supporting Bashagha attempted to take advantage of the chaos and advance towards the capital. However, they were ultimately pushed back. The clashes claimed the lives of 32 people and wounding more than 160 others.

Following the clashes, the Government of National Unity issued an arrest warrant against Bashagha. The claimed prime minister responded by holding Dbeibeh responsible for the deadly clashes.

The situation in Tripoli is clam now. However, both sides are reportedly amassing their forces in the outskirts of the capital in anticipation for a new confrontation.

Turkey, who enjoys good relations with both Dbeibah and Bashagha, has been standing on the side. The Libyan National Army and its Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar have been doing the same, despite voicing their support to Bashagha.
