Written and produced by SF Team: J.Hawk, Daniel Deiss, Edwin Watson;

The Hong Kong protests represent a major challenge not only to the authorities of Hong Kong itself, but also to Beijing, due to both their protracted nature and a high level of organization resembling the Kiev Maidan of 2013/14. The Hong Kong rioters have gone so far as to produce and disseminate a veritable urban warfare manual describing in detail the division of labor between the close-combat fighters, ranged-weapon fighters, as well as various support roles. Their “Plan A” appears to be, as cynical as this may sound, to provoke bloodshed by inducing local law enforcement to use firearms against the rioters. Thus far this has not come to pass. On the one hand, Hong Kong police has displayed considerable self-restraint, and their rules of engagement seem to favor withdrawal and disengagement when faced with superior numbers of rioters. On the other hand, irrespective of the will of the riot planners, the actual rioters have, again thus far, displayed healthy self-preservation instincts. In the few cases where firearms were brandished by Hong Kong police, usually in cases of police officers finding themselves surrounded by the raging mob, the sight of weapons proved enough to compel the rioters to withdraw. That by itself, however, will not solve the problem of riots because there also seems to be a “Plan B.” Whereas, for example, the Kiev Maidan was largely confined to the Maidan Square itself, the geography of Hong Kong riots is much more extensive and unpredictable. Hong Kong rioters have not shrunk from attacking strategic infrastructure, including the now-infamous occupation of the Hong-Kong International Airport that caused massive air traffic disruptions. Likewise the violent riots in popular malls and tourist destinations all over the Hong Kong area have had the effect of depressing tourism and even prompting fears of a capital flight. While so far there are no indications of a lasting effect on the enclave’s economy, this is due to the still-lingering perception the unrest is a temporary phenomenon. Should it continue with present intensity, or, worse, escalate in terms of numbers of participants and methods used, there will be severe negative effects. For these reasons, China’s authorities cannot hope to win through a war of attrition, or expect that an escalation of violence will somehow cure this problem. There are genuine underlying problems in Hong Kong which have made themselves visible through these demonstrations.

What ails Hong Kong?

As with other “color revolutions”, the Hong Kong protests have tapped into a deep vein of discontent within the population. In this instance, rather than poverty or corruption or even the institutional design of Hong Kong’s government, the banal problem facing the average Hong Kong resident is the extremely high cost of living combined with the highly visible class divisions. Since this “special administrative region” of People’s Republic of China represents a major concentration of financial industries, it is also home to massive wealth which, alas, does not appear to be trickling down. While there is also considerable wealth inequality in China proper which is expanding its list of billionaires at a steady pace, the less well-off Chinese urban-dwellers have the option of migrating from city to city in search of better opportunities. But that option is not one the average inhabitant of Hong-Kong is likely to adopt. Moving to China proper would run counter to the strong local Hong Kong identity, and moreover represent a move to a considerably less wealthy part of the world. Thus while the average Chinese citizen is unlikely to exhibit much sympathy for the plight of the protesters from the special administrative area, Hong Kong residents do not evaluate their well-being in comparison with mainland China. For them, the only relevant reference is Hong Kong itself.

One should also note that the violent component of Hong Kong protests is disproportionately composed of young men in their late teens and twenties suggesting the influence of a generation gap and the breakdown in the intergenerational social contract. While Hong Kong, if it were a sovereign state, would have one of the world’s highest life expectancies, its population is rapidly aging due to the low birth rates of the past several decades. A large age cohort is nearing the retirement age, placing a significant financial burden on the considerably smaller younger generation.

Pining for Tienanmen

Further complicating matters for Beijing is Western powers’, and principally the US, interest in using Hong Kong as an instrument in the gradually escalating confrontation between East and West. The rioters’ awareness of their foreign audience was made plain by the displays of US flags as well as the flags associated with Hong Kong’s British colonial past. From the US perspective, crippling Hong Kong economically would inflict serious damage to China’s economy and also badly dent its political image.  Entirely unsurprisingly, Western governments and media wholeheartedly endorsed the protests while turning a blind eye on the increasing violence perpetrated by Hong Kong’s urban warriors who make no bones their aim is to provoke security forces to spill demonstrators’ blood. It is not difficult to predict what kind of Western reaction would follow: sanctions on Hong Kong officials, financial institutions, perhaps even on top Chinese leadership. The media outcry would be so large that countries thus far unwilling to jump on the anti-Huawei bandwagon would find it difficult to maintain that position. It is evident the Trump administration is raring for a pretext to break as many ties between United States and China as possible, and also to force third countries, most notably the states of the European Union, to choose continued economic integration with United States or with China—but not both.  Furthermore, Hong Kong’s financial institutions have played an important role in furthering China’s economic objectives in the last several decades. In addition to playing a role of a major supplier of financial investments, they also  are China’s “invisible hand of the market”. While today China’s economy is far less dependent on Hong Kong, thanks to several “special economic zones” such as Shenzhen located only a short distance from Hong Kong itself, a major crisis in Hong Kong would reverberate throughout China.

Fortunately, there appears to exist a key difference between the Kiev Maidan and the Hong Kong protests, namely the absence of a wealthy oligarch or oligarchs pursuing a reactionary political agenda. None of the Hong Kong business elite have given any indications of supporting the rioters’ more radical agenda, nor is there evidence of their contacts with Western diplomats or intelligence services. It is doubtful such contacts would escape the attention of China’s counter-intelligence services, and China’s political leadership is unlikely to show the sort of timidity Ukraine’s President Yanukovych did in a similar situation, to his own chagrin.

One Country, One System?

The current “one country, two systems” paradigm unfortunately lies at the core of Hong Kong’s current troubles. The establishment of an economic enclave, with little labor mobility across this veritable intra-Chinese border, turned Hong Kong into a political pressure cooker. Its political autonomy in turn meant policies that favored the economic elite, causing the growth of wealth inequality which contributes to the high level of the local government’s unpopularity, to the point it has become a liability for Beijing itself. In the short term, Beijing will likely be forced to funnel considerable financial resources into Hong Kong to relieve the social pressures. In the longer term, however, a lasting solution will require not only a more close oversight of Hong Kong’s social policies, but also promotion of two-way migration between China proper and Hong Kong.

AM Hants

Interesting crowd the Hong Kong Protesters hang out with.

In the picture below, why does The Maidan come to mind, besides those funding the White Helmets and their involvement in Ukraine and the NED NGO US tax payer funded, Hong Kong Protests. Then look at who finances the White Helmets, and were behind The Maidan.

Now that is sad, getting the HK protests associated with white helmets. Maybe Wong fancies Xinjiang as a breakaway? lol

AM Hants

Funded by the same crowd. Don’t Germany, amongst other nations, including the UK and US, fund the White Helmets and didn’t China have to have words with the German Ambassador, with regards sticking their noses into events in Hong Kong.

What I found interesting yesterday, over on Zero Hedge, there was an article, with this image:

https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/0a57981d64350fe440105ea7b066a74f1ef1b04abb7b4fbfb6755722c5ea440f.jpg

Now was that a warning shot to the US, to but out, or China will start telling the world exactly what happened on that day and who was behind it? Or is China expecting the next stage of the Hong Kong protests to include something seriously nasty, as has happened before, when the US was hiding her accounts?

AM Hants

For some reason and have no idea why, when reading my above comment, I have got the ‘Spice Girls’ lyrics running through my head.

‘Spice Up Your Life’ – reminding me of a Soros funded colour revolution. Do believe I have lost it haha.

FlorianGeyer

Thank you for yet another of your excellent reports on the machination’s of the US,UK. This time in Hong Kong.

The UK and US establishment surely cannot be so foolish to alienate China now? The result of this in a resurgent country of over 1 billion people is well past the ability of the UK and US to deploy gunboats and opium to bring China back to the ‘halcyon days’ of Western colonisation, in my opinion :)

Chaos in Honk Kong will also greatly harm Western companies there. HSBC for example.

I cannot fathom the gain for the West in the reality of today, but then I do not consider the US or UK political or military prowess to be what our jingoistic leaders think it is.

AM Hants

Thank you Florian. I have just been on a ramble, owing to a seriously interesting article over on Mint Press.

Did you know that Elliot Abrams and Victoria Nuland are on the Board of Directors at the National Endowment for Democracy NGO? Fully funded by the US tax payer, without them knowing or realising.

Which makes sense, with regards the photo of the Hong Kong protest leader, being in the company of the Mayor of Kiev, who featured in Nuland’s ‘FU EU’ phone call. Together with the leader of the White Helmets/Daesh/ISIS/Al Qaeda or whoever the call themselves today, branch.

Guess Elliot Abrams, the US Ambassador to Venezuela has taken over the crown of John McCain, with regards giving the cookie monster Nuland, a helping hand.

‘…It’s not surprising considering the NED’s board of directors includes two infamous war criminals: Elliott Abrams, who helped funnel weapons and funds to right-wing contras in Nicaragua that terrorized civilians through torture, rape and murder, then tried to cover up these war crimes; and Victoria Nuland, who directed the U.S. policy in Ukraine to fund and arm a right-wing insurgency that engineered the overthrow the democratically elected government — an insurgency that has committed countless war crimes against civilians. ..’ https://www.mintpressnews.com/hong-kong-protest-united-states-destabilize-china/261712/

(The NED Strikes Again: How Neocon Money is Funding the Hong Kong Protests The West has more to do with the Hong Kong protest movement than it would like us to know. It’s the ugly face of Washington’s long-standing foreign policy directed at destabilizing one of its long-standing economic foes: China.)

……………………..

Funny, how Ukraine, Syria, Venezuela, Hong Kong Protests, Russian Protests, all link in, whether it be via Nuland or Abram, they all link into tax payer funded NGOs, whether courtesy of Soros Open Society or courtesy of the National Endowment of Democratics group.

Didn’t the NED fund, train and support Guiado, who believes he is the President of Venezuela, despite having no votes cast? Nuland, who was instrumental in kick starting The Maidan, and wasn’t her choice for President, the Mayor of Kiev, whose only failing, according to Nuland, was he lacked a brain? Didn’t the NED fund, train and support Navalny, over in Russia. The media needy member of the opposition, who only like to protest, in places where it is illegal? He never goes for somewhere that provided you follow the rules, has no problems with a protest or two. The same NED who are also funding the Hong Kong Protests. Then you have the White Helmets, and look who funds them all. Will not bother posting the images of their fund raisers.

Funny how they all link into each other as another false flag anniversary, so comes to mind.

• The “Black Hands” Behind Hong Kong’s Turmoil • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUCpGQz6ETo

AM Hants

Thank you Skoolafish, I was just going to post the link, thanking you and Vanessa Beeley, under the comment above. You saved me from doing it. Brilliant video, that so needs watching.

AM Hants

Whilst watching the video and they mentioned that the NED took over from the CIA operation, in Hong Kong, back in 1995, it reminded me of Chris Patten.

He was part of Margaret Thatcher’s and John Major’s team. Starting as a Junior Minister in 1986, before moving onto the Cabinet, where he served between 1990-1992. The Chairman of the Conservative Party, between 1990-1992. Now why does the negotiations of the fall of the Soviet Union, between Reagan, Gorbechev and Margaret Thatcher, back in 1989, so come to mind, when rambling about Patten?

Anyway, moving on, he went from Chairman of the Conservative Party, over to Governor of Hong Kong, where he served, till it was handed back to the Chinese. Which would have included the CIA 1995 period, before the NED took over from the CIA. Chris Patten then ended up as a European Commissioner from 1997 – 2004. Ending up as a Chancellor of Oxford University, plus the Chairman of the BBC Trust. Funnily enough, he stood down, after the Jimmy Saville story took off and around the time that Mark Thomson of the New York Times had to leave the BBC. His position was the Director General of the BBC and he tried to cancel any bad press on Jimmy Saville and his liking for children, especially whilst working at the Beeb. Mark Thomson, then went on to become the CEO of the NYT.

Common Purpose and Operation Beacon – do believe Chris Patten is also a member of Common Purpose. Operation Beacon, the site is now shut down, but, it says on it’s google link:

‘Common Purpose infects all mainstream political parties, including the Conservatives. Common Purpose to the top of the Conservative Party, with key figures such as David Cameron, Francis Maude, Chris Patten, The map also shows the incestuous CP links to Sir Bob Kerslake, Head of the Civil Service and the BBC….’ Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, Peter Mandelson, Alistair Campbell and John Prescott, are also members of Common Purpose, from the Labour Party, together with Nick Clegg, from the Liberal Democrats, who is now working for Facebook.

The late Timothy Bell, who was a special adviser to Maggie Thatcher, back in the late 70s, early 80s. Timothy Bell, who set up Bell Pottinger, who were given over $500,000 from the Pentagon to spin the Iraq War. Then he went on to set up Sans Frontieres, and set up the Libya to Europe Refugee Cruise Liners. He is also the brother of the founder of Common Purpose, David Bell. Ironic, that Timothy Bell, just happened to leave this world, around the same time as Jeffrey Epstein? No doubt, they used to hang out with the same crowd.

Interesting how they all link intogether, including who finances the White Helmets and who provides extra funds for the BBC and not forgetting their Clinton Foundation links. No doubt, you will find the same crowd heavily linked into Integrity Initiative. Such a small world, when you look at the trouble so few people create, not forgetting the millions of deaths that follow.

When will his all end ? I am sure that it will end badly for all parties and it is all so senseless. Western dominance is waning , mostly due to the greed of the super elite who are unwilling to improve the lives of ordinary people all over the world with some of the surplus money they extract from their own and other nations.

Such greed is just part of the human character, yet such greed has for millenia been the downfall of such venal people in periods of great disparity and the root cause of bloody wars.

We are now at, or very near, the Zenith where such greed is rewarded by a ‘bullet in the back of the head’.

AM Hants

Must admit, I noticed yesterday, that although we have the sensationalised two stories from the MSM, with the rest ‘realty Z lister gossip’, when you look at the alternative media, you can see how things are progressing. Things are working, deals being made, to come on board the Eastern Super Sonic and dump the Western rust bucket, model. I found it quite interesting, that so much is not making it into the ‘Mockingbird Media’.

tensai-dekopon

I hope you say this picture was photo-shopped.If it is fact, how can we accept such a yucky alliance?

AM Hants

The photo, do believe started off as a twitter feed.

However, sadly, the same crowd, who invaded Kosovo, were involved in the break up of the Soviet Union and then lied to get us into the Iraq War, appear to be behind, the Hong Kong Protests, Russian Protests, Ukraine The Maidan, problems in Venezuela, Georgia, Anti-fa, BLM, etc, etc, etc.

The things people do for their 30 shillings and 5 minutes of fame.

Putin Apologist

I don’t if you saw this: Carla Ortiz (a Bolivian-born actress) vists the local White Helmets’ headquarters in Aleppo, Syria right after Aleppo is liberated by the SAA, and discovers that the White Helmets were sharing office space with ISIL.

AM Hants

Brilliant and yes. I saw the video, I think, when they were trying to pass off the Whtie Helmet Chlorine attack and blame it on Russia and Syria. Finding the video interesting, but, never bookmarked it and never got round to sharing it.

Thanks for posting the video, which so needs viewing. Must admit, to being full of awe, with regards the women that are covering Syria, like Whitney Webb, Vanessa Beeley, Eva Bartlett and of course, the actress above, despite what they have to endure, to give us the story. I do appreciate the work of the male investigative journalists as well, but, do like it when women, with no excuses, gender bias or expectations, just get on and carry out the work, based on pure talent and hard work. If that makes sense.

Tommy Jensen

ISIS is moderate rebels in Syria, not? I think they are for the Nobel Peace prize also, for what they saved lives in Syria and for they teacher children in schools, because they will doing for the freedom for the people. Who terroristas will clean up schools and teacher, no? This good.

Good summary. There is an overlooked angle here that I find fascinating: Hong Kong has British governance and, surprise! British outcomes.

Hong Kong has British democracy, a British leader (she and her entire family hold British citizenship), British judges, British police officers, its official language is English. HK is less than 3% of China GDP and HK numbers are not counted towards China’s total GDP. China does not even collect taxes on HK businesses or citizens, who are among the richest on earth.

CE Tung saw housing affordability would be a big issue (especially after British dump all the Vietnamese refugees in HK), he proposed building 85,000 affordable housing (modeled after Singapore HDB so as to create affordability for new families and create more inclusive society in HK).British leaning Pan Democrats together with the public voted down the ideas because the fear generated by pan Democrats, developers that this would destroy the current asset value of home owners. Later, Tung Chee Hwa proposed the “Dangang” plan. Taiwan’s Morris Chang, founder of TSMC, wanted to make chip manufacturing in Hong Kong. The people of Hong Kong resolutely opposed it by “speculating the land and speculating the price of the property” and engaged in a protest [against Article 23 of Basic Law]. As a result, Shanghai invited Morris Chang to take a stake in SMIC in Shanghai. It is now the largest chip manufacturer in China and the fourth in the world. Tung also push hard for logistics, banking, financial services to be more automated and computerized because of competition from around the world and especially from inevitable China. Again voted down by British leaning Pan Democrats. Later, Tung once again proposed the “Chinese Medicine Port” plan because Hong Kong has a strong scientific research system, as well as a large number of biological researchers and more importantly it has a quality inspection system recognized by the whole world. This proposal is a combination of production, education and research. However, again because of the short-sightedness of the city’s capitalists, Tung’s proposal was not adopted. As a result, the Huada Gene appeared in Shenzhen across the river, and it has become a world-class genetic and biotech research enterprise. Tung also saw the British education system as flawed. He proposed IT infusion into the Educational curriculums, have Chinese and Asia history so that youngsters would know how HK became HK, have English and Mandarin as medium of education (replace Cantonese because it would not be relevant in the future world). All were rejected and were accused to be a Beijing lackey and trying to destroy HK language and culture.

Hong Kong’s outcomes are entirely British: a stagnant economy, 23% child poverty, unaffordable housing, and the highest inequality on earth.

AM Hants

Thanks for the interesting comment. I enjoyed reading that.

China is the world’s 2nd largest or largest economy depending on who’s numbers you want to use. They have sensible military spending and a limited global footprint. And combined gold and foreign reserves second to none. The monetary damage being done while locally significant. Overall is a drop in the bucket.

The protests are no threat to the national or even the local government’s grip on power. The agitators will find that their actions are detrimental to their quality of life and future. The Chinese know who the trouble makers are. And will discipline them on an as needed basis in ways that will be both effective. And will make the trouble makers regret their actions.

China is ver instable. If western countries cut china from money, this country will collapse within 1 year.

Peking is nervous, because tehy know, china is still weak, has giant debts.

And military? Still is not able to attack and defeat Taiwan.

You either don’t know what you’re talking about or you’re lying.
