On December 16, a high-ranking officer of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was shot dead along with one of his guards in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.
The officer, Colonel Ali Kamal Barakat, and his guard were reported targeted by unidentified gunmen in the town of al-Shykh Sa´ad in the western Daraa countryside. Barakat was reportedly the commander of a tank battalion of the SAA’s 5th Division.
This was the second attack to take place in al-Shykh Sa´ad this month. On December 8, a military truck was targeted on the town’s road. At the time, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the attack resulted in “casualties and material losses,” without elaborating.
No group has claimed responsibility for any of the two recent attacks in al-Shykh Sa´ad. However, ISIS remains the main suspect.
The terrorist group’s remaining cells in the western Daraa countryside may have carried out the two attacks to avenge their leader Abu al-Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, who was killed in mid-October in a security operation that was carried out by the SAA, related intelligence services and local fighters.
The recent attacks on government forces highlight the fragile security situation in Daraa. More efforts to counter ISIS and other terrorist groups operating in the governorate are still needed to restore security and stability.
