A commander of the Turkish-backed 1st Costal Division has survived an assassination attempt that claimed the life of his wife.
According to opposition activists, unknown gunmen stormed the house of the commander, Abu Farah al-Sheikhani, in the town of Kherbet Eljoz in northwest Idlib late on December 6. The gunmen opened fire on the commander and his wife, then stole his pick-up truck.
While his wife was immediately killed, al-Sheikhani survived the assassination attempt. However, he sustained severe injures.

Some activists claimed that the attack was carried out by a local car theft gang. However, the attack was too risky and appeared to be well-planned.
The 1st Costal Division, active in the northern Lattakia countryside, is a member of the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL). The group is known for its close ties with al-Qaeda’s Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP).
