On November 6, controversial British doctor Shajul Islam survived an assassination attempt in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib where he has been living for several years.

An explosive device that was planted under Shajul’s Hyundai Santa Fe SUV exploded as the vehicle was passing in the district of Wadi al-Nassim in Idlib city. the doctor survived the explosion without any wounds.

Shajul who present himself as a doctor and a humanitarian aid worker is allegedly complicit with terrorist groups in Syria, mainly al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib.

The doctor’s alleged links to terrorist groups surfaced when he was still working at St Bartholomew’s Hospital back in the UK

In October 2012, Shajul was arrested by British authorities and charged with kidnapping two photographers in Syria, British John Cantlie and Dutch Jeroen Oerlemans.

The case eventually fell apart and the charges against Shajul were dropped simply because the prosecution was not able to hear evidence from the victims, who were the key witnesses. Cantlie was unable to appear at the trial because he was still a hostage. He had been briefly freed in July 2012, but was soon kidnapped again, this time by ISIS.

The name of Shajul resurfaced again in April 2017 when he accused the Syrian government of carrying out a chemical attack on civilians at Khan Shaykhun.

Currently, Shajul works in one of Idlib city main hospitals. Syrian opposition activists claim that the doctor, known locally as “Abu Yusuf,” has been gathering financial support for HTS under the cover of humanitarian aid.

The failed assassination was clearly meant to send a message to HTS. The terrorist group lost two of its commanders in the last two weeks.

On October 28, Abu Omar al-Filistini, a senior Palestinian-Swedish intelligence commander of HTS was killed by an explosive device in the eastern part of the region. On November 3, the terrorist group chief recruiter Tamir Mohamad al-Hussein was murdered inside his house in Idlib city.

The attempt on Shajul’s life is clearly linked to the recent assassinations. HTS’ internal foes in Greater Idlib may have carried out these attacks in response to the terrorist group’s recent crackdown on the so-called “independent jihadists” in the region.
