The Damascus government and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) swapped dozens of prisoners near the crossing of al-Eis in southwestern Aleppo on May 17 as a part of new deal.

According to the Syrian Arab Army News Agency (SAA), HTS released nine captives including two women and a child. In return, the Damascus government released twenty-seven prisoners from its jails.

This was the second such a deal between Damascus and HTS in 2019. Last March, Damascus released three prisoners in exchange for a map of Syrian soldiers graves around the Abu Duhur airbase in the southeastern Idlib.

Back then, Omar Ottoman, an official in HTS, told the group’s news network that the they are in talks with the Damascus government to finalize more prisoners exchange deals.

The SANA said in its recent report that the Damascus government is making “great efforts” to free all the remaining captives in “all possible means.” This indicates that we may see more deals in the near future.
