On July 21, three personnel of the Syrian Police were killed and two others were wounded when they were ambushed in the eastern outskirts of the city of Daraa.
The policemen’s vehicle was struck by an improvise explosive device (IED) after it departed Gharaz prison. Following the IED blast, unidentified militants targeted the vehicle with machine guns. The militants were able to flee.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior identified the three personnel who were killed in the ambush as Major Muhammad Al-Alan, 1st Lieutenant Saqr Abdo and policeman Jamal Kolko.

This was the deadliest attack to target Syrian government forces in Daraa this month. The group responsible for the attack is yet to be identified.
In June, a series of attacks in Daraa claimed the lives of several service members of government forces as well as several civilians who were known supporters of the government. No group has yet claimed responsibility for any of these attacks.
The recent attacks highlight the bad security situation in Daraa where many terrorist cells, some of which affiliated with ISIS, are still present and active. The terrorists in the southern governorate appear to be taking advantage of the tense situation in Syria’s northern region that has been keeping government forces busy.
