United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on July 29 that its forces had completed a “heavy wave of strikes” against Iran overnight in response to what it described as “attempted missile attacks” on American troops in Jordan a day earlier.

In a statement, the command said that the strikes hit dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets, including military command centers, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defense sites, and maritime capabilities.

The strikes aimed to “further diminish threats posed by Iran and its proxies to American forces, commercial shipping, and neighboring Gulf countries,” it added.

Overnight, strikes were reported across southern, southwestern and northwestern Iran, according to Iranian officials and state media.

One strike hit a house on Qeshm Island, in southern Iran, killing three people and wounding two others, Iran’s Hormozgan University of Medical Sciences said, while the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported three explosions on the island. Explosions were also reported in the southern cities of Bandar Abbas, Bushehr and Sirik.

In southwestern Khuzestan province, a security official said a strike hit locations in Abadan, according to state broadcaster IRIB, while missile strikes targeted areas near Ahvaz, Shadgan and Arvandkenar, state news agency IRNA reported, citing the same official.

Separately, in northwestern Iran, officials said a missile struck an uninhabited area near the border town of Piranshahr in West Azarbaijan province.

The deadly strikes marked the first attack by the U.S. against Iran since July 24, when both sides agreed to cease fire after a 13-day confrontation to give negotiations a chance.

Responding, the IRGC warned countries assisting the U.S. of a “harsh response,” adding that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, “as long as the arrogance and threats of American officials and their interference in maritime movements in the region continue.”

The U.S. strikes mark the start of a new confrontation with Iran, which is guaranteed to strike back. Recent reports of progress in indirect talks between the two appear to have been greatly exaggerated, possibly even by design from Washington to manipulate Tehran.
