The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had arrested 200 tribesmen during a large-scale security operation in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on May 21.
“The SDF arrested about 200 civilians of Arab tribes, and took them to the security center in Taltet al-Busairah, where the detainees were severely kicked and beaten with whips and hands,” the London-based monitoring group said.
According to the Kurdish-led group, the SDF later released several detainees who turned out to be employees of its civil administration in Deir Ezzor.
During the operation, SDF fighters also shot and killed a civilian who was fishing in the Euphrates River near the town of al-Busayrah.
The SOHR said that the operation, which saw many violations against the locals in southeastern Deir Ezzor, was a response to a recent attack by ISIS. Several personnel of the SDF, including a Kurdish field commander, were killed in the attack which took place on May 19.
The SDF’s attempts to intimidate Arabs in southeastern Deir Ezzor are playing in favor of ISIS, which has been spreading its ideology among the locals there.
Great way to win the hearts and minds of the population. Grab them by the balls. If these tribal people weren’t against the SDF before they really are now. ISIS is the winner here. In Vietnam if the Vietcong couldn’t get a village to support them they would place a mine on the road outside the village. A convoy of US trucks would pass over it and one would set it off. The rest of the troops opened fire on the village for planting the mine. End result , the village went and supported the or did as they were told by the Viet Cong.
Can’t the Russia-backed Syrian government intervene on their behalf?
